Should Germany ban AfD? What impact could this have?

  1. “A recent study by Germany’s Institute for Human Rights exploring the possibility of banning the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has put the far-right political party under the spotlight.

Published on 7 June, the study says the AfD now poses such a danger to the country’s democratic order “’it could be banned by the Federal Constitutional Court.'”

  2. Yes, ban political parties, a clear sign of democracy!

  3. Yes they should but that’s just my personal feelings which shouldnt fucking matter. Same with Melonhead’s Fascist Brothers of Italy, I feel they gotta go.

Now that the fee fees are out of the way, from a legal and logical perspective they shouldn’t ban them. If they did ban them, it will logically incense these people to riot because you just took away their only avenue of being part of the system.

Also from a legal perspective, it’s damn well not constitutional to do so.

It’s better to beat them down within the system by being better than them, make it so that people wont vote for them cause you offered the people a better alternative German party than AfD.

  4. It sounds rather iffy when ‘suddenly’ you wish to ban a party this many years after its founding when its on the cusp of being a major political force.

But it is Germany and I imagine they have something in their laws that guards against political parties slipping too far to one side or the other.

  5. Oh yes, ban elected partys, its very democratic. They even did it in in the 30s, very based democratic manner.

  6. too late for that. should’ve prosecuted their leadership for hate crimes years ago when they were a fringe party. now you’d just make martyrs out of them.

  7. Waiting for the usual ppl coming out of the closet to say that not only far – right should be banned, but also conservative ideologies worldwide

  8. As in many countries in Europe, the rise of the extreme right is mainly a vote of dissatisfaction with the system in place, more than a support. Rather than “banning” the parties that “disturb”, the system in place (which has not yet understood anything) should rather convince the population of their ideas and be more attentive to citizens. Because there, by banishing what disturbs, it is a denial of democracy and it will only reinforce the disgust of many citizens who no longer trust the system and the center left / right governments that alternate.

  9. With over 21% support how can you ban a party and expect things to suddenly get better?

  10. Banning the party won’t make its supporters change their mind or go away. The success of the party is merely a reflection of a sentiment that’s very much alive and growing in German society. That’s what should be addressed.

  11. I’m not German and I know little of the German political scene; all I really know of the AfD is that they are strongly against immigration, which isn’t in itself an anti-democratic policy. According to the article “it officially supports democracy in Germany” and from reading the article I’m not any clearer on what exactly they are doing that is anti-democratic?

Can someone list their anti-democratic policies?

  12. No, as long as the lunatics have a stage, thats where we can see them.

  13. I never understood how banning a party can be viewed as democratic. We have a very big problem in all the other parties. AfD is not even capable to even work. Everybody can see that in the places they got elect. The problem is the general consens among the other parties to be against anything they say. If AfD says 1+1 is 2, there will be everyone gathering around trying to explain you that it isnt true. We dont need a ban, we need some people with IQ above room temperature in the government.

  14. No and the requirements to ban a political party in Germany are very high.

They’re monitored I. E. by the Verfassungsschutz and after the last AFD convention the parts of the report that were in the media said something around the lines: questionable but not straight out bannable by German law.

These current reports are just there because the all time voter highs.

Generally speaking, I think it is better to have those nutjobs concentrated in one party (as long as the party is lawful), so our services can better monitor them.

The other parties have to question themselves why they’re losing so much voters to the AFD and provide solutions for disgruntled voters.

  15. Of course not, that’s a crazy idea and would only strengthen them.

  16. Won’t banning this just cause the followers of this ideology to become even more entrenched, and find other outlets for their anger?

  17. This party will gain another 15% in polls if you try to ban it.

The most efficient way to deal with these populists would be to DO FUCKING BETTER in handling problems.

  18. I’m gonna get downvoted, but maybe try to get people back on your side instead of outlawing competition? As obnoxious as AFD is, it’s speaking to a massive part if this country. Yes with lies, but those people clearly didn’t feel heard or represented by other existing parties, and I refuse to believe they’re all straight up racists and bigots, born and raise.

  19. Here more than one user needs to review the paradox of tolerance, or better yet, review a book on German history.

  20. What about CDU? Christianity shouldn’t have place in politics and state.

  21. Dumb idea.

You will be proving the AfD correct by banning them. The people who were supporting them are not going to suddenly go, “Oh, I guess it’s the Green Party then.” You will be locking in their support for AfD (or whatever rises from the ashes).

FFS, just *listen* to what people are trying to tell you. Some of it is absolutely legitimate. Some of it is hogwash. And some might even be dangerous. By ignoring the legitimate complaints, you are inviting the dangerous ideas into the discussion.

It’s so frustrating. It is getting harder and harder for me to reach people in the AfD, because of the way they are being systematically ignored themselves. They just will not listen; and why should they?

It took me thirty minutes of nonstop dialog with one guy just to convince him that I was willing to take him seriously. Once he accepted that, the dialog immediately became less confrontational and less wild. But it should not take half an hour just to get past all those barriers.

Banning them is only going to make it impossible for anyone to reach these people anymore.

  22. They’ll just rename themselves. Just like Vlaams Blok -> Vlaams Belang.

  23. I think mainstream parties should try to understand what’s causing dissatisfaction amongst their citizens.

  24. Great idea. What is the next thing we could ban in this so-called democracy?

  25. Great ideea, ban a political party thats surging in every poll there is and is voted mainly by conspirationists, racists and xenophobes that claim they are the victims of some conspiracies…way to prove them right.

I swear the best thing to happen to far right parties are the idiots from the left getting in power….

  26. Well yes, if you’re unable to compete against their ideas, just ban the ideas!

That won’t backfire at all, will it?
