Gorby’s a decent guy, but he still lives in the cold war it seems. Ukraine and Georgia aren’t Russian buffer states, they’re independent countries. To the extent NATO and the west is encroaching is because the people there want to.
Poor take, NATO are ‘encroaching’ because sovereign nations are expressing interest in joining. Russia are frequently painting this as if NATO are making people join at gunpoint – when it’s the complete opposite. Grow up and acknowledge that your neighbours want some security assurances following your historically abhorrent behaviour. If Russia were at minimum decent neighbours there would be little interest in joining NATO or working with the west. Reap what you sow.

LMAO, look up what the USA has done all over Europe during the Cold War. Just as much meddling as with South America.
Joke’s on you, buddy. We’ve *always* been brash and arrogant — from the Monroe Doctrine to Manifest Destiny and at all points between and thereafter.
Seriously though, it is cultural and historical. It’s a frontier nation founded by (at the time) the most powerful empire in Europe; and one that formed a deep imprint of exceptionalism as its national post-colonial identity — and that swaggering, often-aggressive posture has been there practically from the start.
Damn I always forget he’s still alive.
He is correct. As much as I can’t stand Putin and the current Russia, Gorby has a point that the US lost it’s grounding in reality to some degree and got too caught up in the “we are the kings of the world”. The fallout of that is still with us.

But that is a topic that has been done to death before and hardly the right time to debate now, as it is the past and the past is the past, the now is the now.
I think it’s arrogant for the Russians to believe they’re always on our minds- they’re not
Most Americans I know just ignored the Russians after the fall of the Soviet union, they couldn’t have cared less what they did.
That would explain the current cries for attention emanating from the Kremlin, like a jealous sibling they only get listened to when they’re causing trouble or undermining somebody else
Add to that the zero-sum Russian mentality, and any success of America is automatically seen as a defeat for them
interesting that putin has even pressured gorby (who did not foresee the consequences of his policies and who left the country to vultures) into expressing support for aggressive military expansionist policies.
When you are up all alone you start losing perspective. Will they be able to get their shit together or the root had spread to much, time will tell.
And the sky is blue. Old guy is still alive, I wonder if he’ll make it to 100.
Gorby’s been jerking off the West for decades now, but the second he steps off the line he toes for one inch, people immediately go for his throat. Somehow, I don’t feel bad for him.
Gorbachev seemed to be a respectable man, now see just broke that illusion. Fuck Russia!
He’s right. America should stay out of the Ukraine-Russia conflict and it should stop involving itself in other countries full stop, unless instructed to do so.
