Belgium will close all nuclear reactors by 2025

  1. I am Belgian and I don’t f^cking understand this federal government.

What’s even worse is that they are planning to build more gas plants. At least they will build more hydrogen plants.

The EU is gonna tax us like crazy because our CO2 pollution is gonna rise sharply.

  2. Imagine wanting a green policy and opposing nuclear at the same time. European opposition to nuclear is irrational and dangerous.

  3. Oh my god and just to the north we are making plans to build 2 of them. What are we doing in Europe, why can’t we coordinate this shit??

  4. Smells lile Russian gas to me. And money. Someone’s getting big checks for these. Nuclear power is the cleanest we’ve got so far (compared to gas, coal etc) until we find something better and more easily wide-spread.

  5. Russia and China are knocking-out a whole range of modern and cheap nuclear reactors. The EU should buy 200, go zero carbon in 10 years and even get the bulk buyers discount.

  6. This would be great if Belgium can comfortably run 100% on renewable energy. Until then though it’s a negative change.

  7. Seems like the green party is just an anti-nuclear group with some environmental/green marketing sprinkled over it. We should take global warming more serious by closing gas plants, not building more of that junk.

  8. Everyone here screaming about how this is a dumb idea for the environment etc. But how old are these reactors? Are there any newer than 30 years? The mistake might not be closing them down but rather not building new ones in the past 20 years.

I’m not against nuclear energy but I’m happy to see that they finally close down Doel with it’s fractured pressure vessel and substandard steel and construction. This powerplant has been part of sometimes serious tensions between Belgium and the German state of North Rhine Westphalia.

Modern nuclear power plants are safe sure, but having 50+ year old reactors with known damage to vital systems running in one of the most densely populated areas of the continent is just a bad idea.

  9. “very nice”, giving more power to Putin!

    Dumbasses, how is gas green?!?!

With idiots like these, it’s no wonder Putin thinks it can just invade Ukraine.

  10. As someone living in a part of Germany where the government holds iodine drugs for every citizen because of Tihange(Belgian nuclear power plant near the border to Germany) and its desolate condition, Iam looking forward to these plans.

  11. The decision was made 20 years ago that Belgium would go for a full nuclear exit. The green party was part of the government back then.

In 20 years that passed, not one of the governments did anything to prepare us for the closure of the plants. No significant investments were made to be ready for 2025. The green party has not been in any of these governments.

The previous government had to decide if we would continue with the plans to shut down the plants. As the nuclear plants were in need of renovations in case they wanted to keep usin them after 2025. But investment needed to start then. Waiting any longer was not possible. They decided to proceed with the nuclear exit.

Now that the final decision has to be made, keeping the nuclear plants open is not longer possible. And there were not enough investments in alternative energy sources done in the past 20 years to fill the gap that the nuclear plants will leave.

So, the green party is not to be blamed for this. If you want to blame someone, blame all the parties that have been in government during the past 20 years and did nothing for what was coming.

  12. Those plants have shown to be unsafe numerous times. I live in the Netherlands right in the area where everyone will die if something bad will happen. Im happy for this.

  13. Belgian reactors are one of the oldest. It is a proper time either to close them or to modernize. Their modernization is very expensive for Belgium. It is better to close a reactors then to have an another Chernobyl

  14. Belgium ‘may’ close all nuclear reactors by 2025.

Apparently they don’t have enough ‘bids’ (or ‘issued permits’) for replacement power yet, if that is still the case in march then they could extend the NPP’s license.

*With everything planned for closure, delayed preventive maintenance and refueling and stuff will be a bit of a headache for some, I suppose.*

  15. Misinformation:

They plan on to close the remaining old and faulty reactors. Then they’ll build some new eventually.

  16. Suuure, burning huge amounts of gas is a lot better than using minute amount of thorium in modern thorium reactors.

veeeery green much eco environment wow
