Why Putin is willing to risk a catastrophic war to dominate Ukraine

  1. Thinking that concessions towards Putin(guarantee that Ukraine will not join NATO) will convince Russia to leave Ukraine alone is not even in category of ‘wishful thinking’ it`s in category of ‘7-year old reflections on geopolitics’ and a nice gift to Putin in his journey to remain his position in Russia.

  2. Putin will invade Ukraine because he can. EU is not ready to fight and we know that sanctions don’t work. Additionally he has leverage due to the energy Russia delivers to Europe.

  3. Because his authoritarian / dictatorial system of governance does not yield any positive results for ordinary Russians in social, political and social-economical spheres. By pumping up nationalistic feelings about defending mother Russia against a non-existent external threat from the West and by engaging in war, his system of governance may still give some Russians some satisfaction.

  4. Because he’s kinda sure West will back off again. If we grew a spine some 10 years ago any military action would not be on the table today.

It’s similar to pre-WW2 situation in many ways.
