Staffing was already an issue before increased covid cases, but the rest of the country will revel in literally anything negative happening to London. I don’t expect any sort of Govt. Support until the rest of the country is in a hole.
Went to restaurants this evening. They were absolutely dead. No one wants to risk getting it before Christmas.
New year we will learn how much people care about lockdown.
May are facing losing at least 50% of their bookings in the run up to the holidays, on top of potentially losing staff to isolation. I think they know the writing is on the wall and a circuit breaker is much more ‘when, not if’, so they are cutting their losses early and praying the government will be there to support them.
London is not UK although Londoners might like to think so
This happened near me during the pingdemic. No official orders to close, but plenty of places had to shut because their entire staff were isolating.
I work on the trains out of London and usually at this time of year the trains are absolutely rammed. This week? Utterly dead.
Was talking to some people last night who were travelling – one said that London was dead and the other said that most people they knew had tested positive.
I’ve got a bad feeling about this.
Win win for the government really. People lock themselves down, no one gets paid anything, doesn’t cost the government money and probably helps the NHS a little bit.
I was in a pub last night for a leaving do, and it was no where near as busy as you would expect for that Friday of the year.
Not been in the UK for over 5 months now but really it sounds like it’s getting positively dystopian.
Was in Brighton today, was still fairly busy but nowhere near what I’d expect for like the last Saturday before Christmas.
Also at work where I’m in a shop it has been fairly busy but nowhere near what you’d expect for like pre Christmas shopping.
My local pub in Cambridge just shut itself, after having their Christmas party last night, and this morning announcing that their staff all have it.
Was in London for the last time last week this year working and it was clearly very empty. Was in Birmingham yesterday and the city Center was absolutely rammed, totally the opposite of London. German market full, streets teeming with people doing shopping.
I went to a restaurant in Baker street on Friday night at 8 (finished work late). It was busy enough I had to chase staff. About 80% full. Maybe that’s because other places were shut. But it didn’t seem any quieter than it has been for the last few months to me at least.
