  1. As opposed to now, where drugs are illegal and we never see people openly using them…..

  2. Take a walk though Dublin city if you want to see open drug use.

  3. So basically zero change regardless of whether its legal or illegal

  4. The problem has gotten worse and worse under these laws.

If drugs are decriminalised there’s still no reason why gardaí can’t clamp down on “open drug use”. This guy claimed decriminalisation in an Irish context would be legalisation in his presentation to the citizens assembly

Really looks bad when they are telling gardaí to stand down in relation to burglaries and joyriding

  5. If he is worried about open drug use he has been doing a shite job so far

  6. If they are legal then what is the problem with their use in public? We banned smoking tobacco in public places and have lots of areas you can’t drink alcohol in public, use similar laws and regulations for every drug.

If decriminalisation keeps the cartels rich then make it legal and cut their revenue stream. When we had the head shops the dealers lost a lot of customers. Supply all drugs from shops and tax them. We’d reduce the risk of over dosing because the quality will be guaranteed.

Addiction is a separate and series issue that will need resources. But the vast majority of people taking drugs aren’t addicts.

  7. They are really just worried about not being able to pad the stats, if they can’t arrest someone for having few joints how will they keep drug arrests up.

  8. Open drug use is huge. Have you seen the amount of people drinking in public??

  9. Deal with the open violence first then give out about drug use.

  10. Yes when things are legal people will do it more openly that’s the whole point or am I missing something

  11. He’s right, absolutely bonkers scenes outside the local methadone clinic this morning.

  12. The same guards that do fuck all about anything except car tax are now worried about drugs? Interesting. Maybe he’s worried that they might have to do their job.

  13. It appears this man has never walked through Dublin at any given time of the day. What a complete fucking moron.

  14. Prohibition has never worked, in any country, ever.

There’s something deeply disturbing about someone who can look at a policy that has literally zero successes, and is currently failing miserably in every aspect and causing massive societal harm in the meantime, and think: this is the best way forward.

UFO conspiracy theorists have better thought out ideas. It has to be one of the most paralysingly stupid ideas of humanity.

  15. They do frug deals outside the garda Station at Busaras FFS.

    So out of touch

Seriously though, it’s already rampant and in the open. Go to a pub toilets and get swabs of the sinks or even just have your eyes and ears open on a night out and you will catch cocaine usage. Weed, just walk down the street and smell in most of the city centre. All legalisation would do is drop the illusion of action the Gardai are putting up.

  17. ‘Top Garda’ should focus on enforcing the laws and not dictating what they should be.

  18. No what will drop is there arrest rates and forcing them to solve harder crimes
