TIL that 8 British SAS soldiers were arrested by the Gardaí & The Irish Defense Forces after they had crossed the border from Northern Ireland into The Republic of Ireland on the night of the 5/6th of May 1976.

  1. A young Peter Sutherland was their defence counsel

  2. I was always surprised that no one in the gardai tipped the local Provos off to this. Surely would have been the best possible chance of taking out 8 SAS that they could ever hope for – would have been a major result for them.

  3. I have family who live close to the border with Armagh, apparently crossings were common enough if they thought they could get away with it.
