Ukraine wants Canada to use ’diplomatic muscle’ to sell peace plan to skeptical countries

  1. We are in. That’s exactly the kind of thing canada does

  2. Not sure who is skeptical other than the dictatorships

  3. I’m so sorry to let you all know this, but…that muscle is atrophied to shit.

  4. We can do that? I don’t think we really have the kind of clout that can change minds through soft power. I think that Russia in its current state is unresponsive to the concept of soft power. Any peace plan is going to have to start after both sides have essentially stopped fighting. Russia is clearly willing to sacrifice a million people if it means they control more land in Europe for centuries to come, and optics be damned.

If China and India also applied pressure, it might make an impact. They are literally the only third party countries who could influence the outcome in any way. After independence, Russia came to India’s aid when nobody else would. China is their neighbour and one of their largest trading partners. Canada doesn’t have the ‘diplomatic muscle’ or history or geographic proximity to get in the middle of that. We’ve got 40 million people, barely. India and China have a billion each. Any ‘muscle’ that we could try to flex on those countries would itself be an injustice. We can talk, but ultimately if they don’t listen then we cannot ‘muscle’ them into action.

  5. It would be really nice if Canada could do it. However I must honestly admit the first thing that came to my mind was that scene from the Hollywood movie where Schwarzenegger plays a US fireman on the path of revenge somewhere in Colombia or something. There he meets some Canadian guy working among guerillas and all kinds of nefarious people and he tells Arnold something like: I have no problems working here. I’m from Canada, nobody gives a damn about us.
