  1. This is a mistake. Koran burnings are moronic. Banning them is anti-democratic. This is a win for tyranny and utterly unneeded.

  2. Unsurprising, the stance of the EU and as such its members have always been pro-restriction. And everytime they restricted speech against somebody this sub hated you guys cheered, now the group and religion you hate the most gets to restrict speech for their man made religion.

I have said it before, if you wonder why the gun nuts in the US don’t give an inch, this is why.

  3. Not only the koran. Anything that maybe can be considered religious. It’s a very vague definition.

Example if the religion Flying Spaghetti Monster is approved as a religion. Burning of these headgear’s could be considered an offence and you’ll be 2 years in prison

  4. This is a disgrace. Freedom of speech in Europe has only been deteriorating in recent years.

  5. The government went from “only in front of ambassades” to now every in the public space, also in your private space, if you make it public on SoMe.

    It’s not only about korans.

It’s everything considered religious objects and every action considered offensive to them.

Oh, and the majority government will push it through parliament and bypass the normal time to debate it.

    It’s ridiculous.

On the bright side it does not look like the law will include Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

All hail our Mette Mum, the eraser of SMS and slayer of Minks!

Master of open faced mackerel sandwiches.

    Live with it!

  6. the Danish constitution protects the right freedom of speech. There’s no way this can possibly be constitutional.

  7. Holy fck these are sad times for freedom across europe.. bunch of pussy countries.

  8. In Dänemark bin ich wirklich enttäuscht. I expected them to be a little more courageous than Sweden in this regard, and if they handled this easily, we will definitely follow. Dies ist beschämend.

  9. Bowed down to terrorists, even if it protects all religious symbols. Those burnings never burned someone elses property, but their own copies of Koran. This will be seen as a sign of weakness by religious zealots and pushed and exploited further.

  10. Not surprising that a populistic country like Denmark would fold like a twig on cornerstone democratic values. Populists gonna populism.

  11. Basically punishing blasphemy like in the middle ages. Congrats!

  12. Shame. We’re legislating taste at this point. And we’re appeasing to a 6th century barbaric religion that hasn’t changed much since its inception. All those freedoms we hold so dear in the western world are being eroded slowly but surely

  13. Kinda sad that they do it because they’re afraid. It’s the same people who are outraged and threaten with violence that killed hundreds in France.

  14. I guess if a group reacts violent enough, their belief too can become protected by law.

  15. What is the point of free speech when you ban it as soon as people who’s opinion you don’t agree with speak.

  16. I consider burning holy books unnecessarily provocative and rather distasteful, but it should absolutely be completely legal unless you’re storming into a mosque or synagogue to do so.

After all, your holy tome is not necessarily someone else’s, and that someone else is under **no obligation whatsoever** to follow your specific religion’s rules. Besides, who cares? I’m pagan, so we don’t really have a central, cohesive text, but if we did and you want to burn one… sure? Go ahead.

Kowtowing to *any* religious pressure sets a very bad precedent.

  17. Damn Denmark … I thought you were one of the last remaining clever country in EU.

  18. How about we lock up all the crazy people that think they should kill others because of burning a piece of paper?

  19. It is treason, then.

Let’s see if the Danes value liberty or if they are willing to give it up for peace of mind.

  20. Since there is only one religion that has problems with burning a piece of paper, how bout we ban people of that religion coming to Europe?

I prefer to feel safe, rather than hear of increasing threat levels in the name of… what? That we are so free we allow others come and kill us? That’s the freedom we were working towards?

  21. This is what happens when you abuse freedom of speech to essentially hurt another group of people. It would be the same result if there were mass demonstrations of burning the Jewish Torah to make them not feel welcomed in the country and eventually the government is going to bend and rights get taken away. I don’t think its fair obviously. But thats the end result when you let Far right hate groups fuck you over on your rights. Religious and/or political extremists are literal children.

  22. If this passes, it is very bad for democracy and free speech – and a win for religious tyrants who want to see everyone subjugated by their religion.

  23. my grandpa would say “daneses putos”… and I would have to agree with him

  24. People also forget that it will just strenghten far-right. It happens over and over, we bow to religious zealots and sell munition to far-right extremists at the same time.

Fascists do not spawn in some dungeons with bald heads and Swastika tatoos. They are made from normal people slowly and over time, as these small changes push them towards extremism more and more. Until it’s too late.

This policy is just a loss for every normal, sane person. Christian, Muslim or Atheist.

  25. Incredibly pathetic and disappointing of the Danish government.
