They bloody are, so many of them – I got about a kilo yesterday, and there are shed loads of crab apples around – lousy to eat (very, very very sour) but loaded with pectin. Going to go a bit Bob Marley soon.
my freezer is full of the fuckers.
Many are disappointingly tasteless though.
Bountiful too. They are normally picked within five minutes of appearing near me, however there are so many that it has been weeks and the crop still has not been picked clean.
Last year was a good crop. We have them on our allotment. We had to buy a second freezer to store them.
This year … not quite so numerous, but much bigger. Picked a lot already. Found an amazing crop just around the corner from where I live too, tucked away. Been several times a week. We eat them every day on our breakfasts.
They have people who pick them as a job? We just used to go brambling as kids, fecking loads around. Who is *buying* them?
What makes a good blackberry? Do they need lots of water, lots of sun, both? Or is there a golden ratio of weather that produces good ones? I’m not talking about industrial farming of them, just naturally occurring ones.
My guess is that this year’s crop are largely tasteless due to the extraordinarily wet July.. just as they are ripening up.. is it better to wait a few hot days for them to lose the water and sweeten up?
