Taoiseach expresses regret over lockdown halt to home building

  1. Last winter was rough, but really, even if they DID have those four months of open construction, would there be any change? Highly doubtful. And casting peoples minds back to that time, we didn’t want people catching the OG corona when cases and deaths were at an all time high by sending construction workers out there.

  2. I remember saying this was a horrible idea back in February and people I spoke to about it looked at me in shock that I dared to question the measures. They were so focused on covid they didn’t consider the idea that maybe it was a bad idea to halt housing construction during a severe housing crisis.

There has been a ridiculous narrative of black-and-white thinking during this whole thing. Just because I spoke out against shutting down construction did not mean I thought covid was a hoax. News flash, you’re *allowed* to have a nuanced view of it.

Covid can be serious, and can kill. But that doesn’t mean every measure to tackle it is justifiable. This was one of them. It worries me that in early 2021, covid was only thing that seemed to matter to the Irish government. That is a very dangerous thing to do because there were so many other problems that were ignored. They let every other issue fall by the wayside. And now we’re dealing with the consequences.

  3. He is only sorry that FF/FG are down in the polls , even without covid the government would have built 0 homes because they expect developers and county council’s to do so and not being money grabbing chancers, fact is we are to far past the point of no return for a entire generation, in another 10 years those aged 30 now who are still renting will never own a home and when they retire will be a huge burden to the state

  4. Its as if that 4 month shut down caused the housing crisis and not the sale of huge land banks to private equity companies at knockdown prices

  5. Micheal should be applauded for his honesty here.

The FF of the Aherne-era would would never have admitted this. Instead, they would have spun it up as if they were doing the construction industry a favour.

  6. To think of all the money that could have been pumped in to the pockets of his friends, completely missed out in that. Feel bad for the poor fella, he might never get another shot at it

  7. You’re not getting houses built till 2046 because of these 4 months folks.

In other news, taoiseacht puts hands in pockets, whistles and shrugs after being asking why there’s been and continues to be no meaningful dent in housing supply. Fuck me if another mica incident happens, we’ll be losing houses faster than they’re built

  8. God Im so sick of him expressing concern, regret and dismay at whatever is in the headlines from one week to the next. For someone who wanted a leadership position he doesn’t seem to want to do very much with it.

  9. Get multiple property owners under control and the issue will be resolved. The place where people raise families and feel their safest shouldn’t be an investment opportunity for foreign hedge funds or some guy in Dalkey. Landlords add nothing to the economy, they’re just parasites.

  10. no regret at making vulture funds exempt from stamp duty nor not out right banning them from snapping up social hosing like canada and some other European states.

He can fuck right off with his feigned electoral face saving efforts.

  11. Say what you want about this government, but they did well to have the foresight to introduce a lockdown 10 years before Covid was even detected.
