  1. Sadiq Khan has accused the government of “weaponising air pollution” before his expansion of London’s ultra-low emission zone (Ulez).

The city’s mayor said he was disappointed at the lack of ministerial support for the policy and its accompanying scrappage scheme.

From Tuesday, Ulez will be expanded to include the whole of the capital, making it the world’s largest pollution charging area. People who drive in the zone in a vehicle that does not meet minimum emissions standards will have to pay a £12.50 daily fee or risk a £180 fine, reduced to £90 if paid within 14 days.

A £160m scheme run by Transport for London (TfL) enables residents, small businesses, sole traders and charities scrapping non-compliant cars to claim grants.

Khan expressed frustration that the scrappage programme had no government funding, unlike those run in several other English cities.

He said: “It was this government that gave financial support to cities like Bristol, Birmingham and Portsmouth towards their clean air zones. If clean air is right for them then why isn’t clean air right for London?

  2. The opposition to this comes from two main groups. The first group are people who genuinely don’t give a shit about other people. The second group are people who genuinely don’t give a shit about other people as they are Tories.

They justify their opposition by being either willfully or inadvertently uninformed and will go on about global warming, poor people who can’t afford to buy a new Tesla, CO2, the scrappage scheme not paying enough/the scrappage scheme being a waste of money, shoeless orphans in Africa, the MOT, money grabbing by the Mayor/waste of billions by the Mayor, coal fired power stations, cruise liners and the Indian space programme.
