Hundreds if not thousands of people died trying to escape communist Romania and swim across the Danube to Yugoslavia.
My parents have some family friends who till this day have no idea what happened to one of their sons. Unofficial investigations point to being shot and killed by border guards, but to this day they don’t have closure.

The Ukrainian Border Police recently reported that they are detaining up to 20 men a day.
And according to unofficial Ukrainian figures, 90 men have died on the journey to Romania – either drowned in the Tisa, or frozen to death in the mountains – in the past 15 months.
