Mica campaigners in discussions to form new political party

  1. Just what the country needs – other counties trying to replicate the Healy-Raes….

Obviously a really shit situation for all affected, but it’s not like they’ve been completely abandoned, I mean billions of euro are going to be spent to rectify it, even if not everyones happy. Can’t help but feel some of the loudest campaigners like the attention now.

  2. Like any new party, they will die a death. Especially if their only, or at least their main, campaign promise is to get a better redress scheme for Mica affected homeowners.

I do think this country need more political parties, but politicians running for election to a *national* government , campaigning & getting elected on local issues is one of the dumbest fucking things in Irish politics. National government looks at and is concerned with the bigger picture, not what happened to a few hundred or few thousand people in one part of the country.

If they get elected and happen to end up in government, then they will pretty much be told how they are required to vote by the party or the government they’re part of. The only chance they have is if they are propping up the government and they really desperately need that one extra vote, then they might get something, like the (Tony) Gregory Deal a few decades ago, and even then, he was an independent, so wasn’t bound by the party.

  3. While I agree the need for reform in politics in Donegal, and other counties, I don’t think we need the MICA group doing it unless they can expand their platform.

  4. This is why I hate localism in our politics. I want massive reform of local government, so that councils have much more power. But I want local issues out of national politics.

  5. Most likely independent but would better to pit the current people against each other. Donegal and Mica should be supported but there definitely needs to be balance in terms of the value of support given.

  6. The tax payer is covering between 75% to 95% of their loss. What more do they want? It’s a terrible situation, but surely the tax payer isn’t solely responsible for rectifying it?

  7. These the lads that took pleasure in deliberately preventing traffic from moving around, people getting to hospitals, doctor appointments, flights, etc. and bragged about it?

    They’ll do well, yeah.

  8. The junior minister for Mica role will be hotly contested. Not sure how it will hold up.
