> “We will immediately connect extinguished nuclear power plants to the grid.” – that was the claim made by Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s CDU party, which is currently in opposition.
>
> Friedrich Merz, who is the chairman of Germany’s largest CDU party, gave an interview to Bild newspaper in which he stated that one of his first decisions after coming to power would be to reconnect Germany’s extinguished nuclear power plants to the grid.
>
> Asked about the potential first three steps to be taken after his party enters government, Merz replied that they would be to reduce the tax burden currently increasing the price of energy, to immediately connect the extinguished nuclear plants to the grid, and to cut red tape.
>
> Germany shut down its atom on April 15, 2023, when the last three German nuclear power plants were extinguished. Over the past 20 years, 22 GW of capacity using the technology has disappeared from Germany’s energy landscape.
>
> In early August, Bild reported on a study by the U.S. consulting firm Radiant Energy Group, which indicated that up to eight German nuclear power plants could return to operation. The study was led by nuclear engineer Mark Nelson, who based it on, among other things, consultations among board members, employees and experts of German energy companies including: former nuclear plant operators.
Friedrich Merz is a populist. He’d promise to shut the entire power grid down if that got him votes.
This man also voted against a law to make it illegal to rape you wife…
so 🤷🏼♂️
Everything Friedirch Merz says is irrlevenat. He is a conman and his on party will lop his head off once election comes around.
I thought that once the core of a nuclear power plant is switched off it can’t be switched on again because it basically breaks, same as the blast furnace of a steel factory.
This is obviously non-realistic from a technical point of view. But the reason the CDU keeps making these promises is because the installation of renewable energy capacities (especially wind turbines) is unpopular among part of their electorate in rural areas, in typical NIMBY fashion. This is not to make “cleaner” electricity (coal production would stay the same, renewables would have to be gimped again).
Our current government promised this aswell in the election. When they got into office reality caught up.
