UK unlikely to send troops if Russia invades Ukraine, says defence secretary

  1. Always good to let potential invaders know who won’t oppose them. Very polite and helpful of the UK.

Unrelatedly, which country had all those emigrés donating money to the Tory party?

  2. With the cuts Dave and Barry are probably busy driving for Tesco. That would leave no one to send.

  3. In the 90’s the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Britain and the US signed a memorandum to provide Ukraine with security assurances in return giving up nuclear weapons. The Russians have broken it on several occasions and the UK and US haven’t really helped Ukraine.

  4. america aren’t even going to send troops when russia invades ukraine. the best ukraine can hope for are arms deliveries but even that’ll just be sending lambs to the slaughter if they resist russian aggression

  5. The Donbass region is going to come under Russian control, one way or another. The ‘fate’ of the rest of Ukraine probably depends on how they respond to that.

For NATO to go there to fight would necessitate strikes against Russia itself, ‘the Rodina’, and that is just way too dodgy to contemplate.

  6. Bullies will be bullies and it just proves the point that Russia can do whatever fucks it wants and no one can do anything about it…The issue is that they won’t stop on Ukraine…there is Georgia…and then all Baltic conutries…

  7. But Britain attacked Iraq because they were thought to have WMD. But now Britain wouldn’t do the same for a European ally? Ukraine has some oil. But do Russia have WMD? Oh, it’s because they do that Britain wouldn’t be part of any coalition.

  8. I lived in Ukraine for three years.

Let me tell you Civil war will sprout up instantly and be more deadly than the invasion itself.

Eventually there would have to be an East/West split.

  9. Of course not, they are major beneficiaries of Russian money and influence at the highest level of the UK government. Johnson is one of them.

  10. But if you go to Kurdistan and fight with the de facto allies of NATO we’ll arrest and imprison you under terrorism laws

  11. Next we’ll tell people we won’t use our nukes. One of the great advantages with having a well trained modern military is your enemy doesn’t know when they might have to face you. If you tell them they’ll *never* have to face you, half of their job is done for them.

In this case, not only have we told Russia we won’t fight against them, we’ve also told Ukraine we won’t fight *for* them. Surely this is diplomatic suicide? I understand Ukraine isn’t exactly one of our closest allies or anything, but Christ. God forbid we ever need their help.

Not to mention we told Ukraine we’d provide them security in the 90s, now we’ve hung them out to dry. First we alienate ourselves with Brexit, now we tell allies we won’t fight for them.

  12. No shit. We’re in no position to do and shouldn’t get involved. We’ve got enough shite on our plate without another fucking war to deal with. Covid, brexit kicking our collective arses, Boris being a fucking cunt are what we should focus on.

  13. Just imagining what I would have seen in the papers if Corbyn or anyone he appointed said out loud “We wouldn’t send anyone to oppose a Russian invasion of Ukraine”. Somehow I don’t think it’d be a nuanced analysis of the realpolitik

  14. Russia has already proven to be more of a danger to British national security than Iraq ever was. However due to realpolitik, (they’re bigger than we are), we will not defend Ukraine.

Russia under Putin is fucking awful, an absolutely hateful regime. The UK is as well though, we have killed, or through our actions lead to thousands of people dying because it suited our political class and they could convince enough people to support them.

When a politician talks of punching above our weight they mean drone strikes on wedding parties in Muslimvania, but not clear and present existential threats to Western democracy like Putin’s Russia.

This is both entirely predictable and depressing, and it’s a tragedy of the British people’s own making. They have voted for this.

  15. The Tory Government cannot afford to send troops to aid Ukraine, all our army, air force, and navy are needed to protect the corrupt Tories from an insurrection against their rancid festering government!

  16. Grimly, I told you so. The EU’s attempts to cling to governance over the UK means there is now no chance the UK public would put themselves at risk to protect the EU’s eastern border (Ukraine is an EU association state and Russia moving towards them is seen as a threat to the EU’s east as their neighbour eats up all the buffers between them).

Boris and Liz have been doing an admirable job of talking up western solidarity, making potential economic sanctions on Russia sound as big as they can, etc. Fundamentally, though, the extent of support the UK public is now willing to give to the EU or its accession states is now very short. The EU has re-cast itself not as an ally but as a closer threat.

The EU is a mess internally as well. Ukraine is an EU association state but France has gone *even softer* on backing them, to the point of criticising the US’s warnings. It’s grim reading, but continental Europe seems to have dug itself a hole it doesn’t look like getting out of.

While this is happening, China is testing the waters (economically) on how much the EU will really back Lithuania. It’s not looking good for the EU there either.

  17. Cannot have Boris / the Tories upsetting their paymasters by doing anything more that pretending to be offended and give a stern finger wagging or maybe even a letter when Putin invades the Ukraine

  18. Yeah, we know, because it happened, and we didn’t send anyone, we remember.

    Doesn’t feel like 7 years

  19. This minister a idoit, you don’t broadcast that you have no plans to not defend them to the world, if britian wanted to tell Ukraine they won’t then do so in secure channels. That way Russia won’t know if Brtian willing to risk it or not.

  20. The truth is nobody is going to stop Russia from taking Ukraine, UK won’t put itself at risk and European Union doesn’t have the man power for it.
