Britain is good at banking and financial engineering. It’s not so good at actual engineering. The cheapest UK tramway cost more than the most expensive french tramway

  1. These projects are all built by international construction consortiums.

  2. It’s another one of these posts about the UK? Snooze

  3. OP, you don’t make sense. If the UK’s Trams were poorly designed, broke down more often, had more accidents, etc then you could blame the engineers.

  4. Expensive =/= bad engineering

Nobody’s arguing that these projects are expensive, some probably for good reason some probably not, but bad engineering has nothing to do with it

  5. Sounds like France are cutting corners. Message received OP; I’ll make sure to avoid French trams.

  6. 99% of the problems and costs of engineering projects in the UK have got nothing to do with actual engineering.

  7. For some context on the Manchester Second City Crossing, it’s a very short (about half a mile) line through a very built up and historic area connecting two big junctions with a lot of switches. It shouldn’t cost as much as it did but that’s why the per mile cost is so great.

  8. If you think those are expensive, look at the U.S.

  9. Thatcher killed British engineering and manufacturing to replace it with financial engineering, think tax havens and financial instruments.
