New Belfast City Centre Foot Bridge to be Paid for by Irish Government

  1. Interesting detail in the article about the proposed connection to a bridge in Cork. Basically, they seem to be doing them as sister bridges which I think has the potential to be a neat idea.

    But what’s also interesting is saying that the Cork bridge, the Waters Street Bridge would be a cycling/pedestrian swing bridge. The Waters Street bridge has long been planned, but Cork Port still uses the quays further in, so it isn’t possible to build a regular bridge until it moves down to Ringaskiddy. The idea of a swing bridge had previously been dismissed on costs grounds. Although at that stage it was to be at least a car bridge, if not luas as well (perhaps a hint there about the issues on the Cork luas route selection?)

    It’ll be an important bridge for Cork in terms of Docklands (and Pairc Ui Caoimh) access to Kent Station, you lob off a fair detour if you can go across there. Would still be a substantial walk mind. Easy cycle though.

  2. Be great if the Irish government would pay a bit more attention to people in the state which they tax but neglect.
