  1. “Free speech is dead!” says the author of 17+ books who then goes on to list all the things your not allowed to say in a public news paper that routinely says these things also.

And what are they so desperate to say that is supposedly being surpressed? Oh, the usual. Just anti-trans hate, Climate change denial, Race-pseudo science, hating the equality act, blaming decades of under-building of houses on recent immigrants.

    Just standard bullshit.

  2. Another Boomer confusing a right of free speech with publishers being obligated to provide a platform for viewpoints they may not agree with?

    Colour me surprised.

  3. Conservative minded people have been free to poison the UK for decades now with utter lies, with no rules against them doing so.

The conservative-backed media is free to say what the fuck they want, to get whatever result they want.

  4. Free speech in the UK is dead because the UK government have taken draconian steps to clamp down on dissent and pass legislation to criminalise organised protests ❌

Free speech is dead because if you spend your free time bullying minorities then some people might criticise you ✔️

  5. Amazing how someone could write a piece with this outlook and fail to mention the reaction to anyone thought to be protesting the Kings coronation.

  6. Absolute bullshit. There are actually some issues regarding free speech in this country, like that ASD girl last week who got arrested for saying a police officer looked like her lesbian nan. Right wingers don’t understand the concept that free speech means that the government won’t arrest you, it doesn’t mean that you get to force people to provide you with a platform.

  7. Why is it that the ‘free speech’ fanatics never talk about clearcut examples such as the Tory policy of banning people who have criticised the Government from speaking at Whitehall events, or when the PM forced a major newspaper into not publishing a story relating to his wife, instead its always an ambiguous defence of those with extreme or unpopular views on race or climate change being denied a ‘platform’.

  8. We don’t have free speech in this country and we never have done, but it’s not because people don’t want to give others a platform. Not wishing to give someone a platform is in and of itself a freedom.

Examples of people’s right to free speech and expression being infringed on are the arrests made for protesting the coronation, or people being sent to prison for making unpleasant jokes, especially when those jokes were made in private.

  9. Free speech? FFS we have never had the “Right” of free speech at any point. i dont understand this wishy washy Americanism that people seem to thing we have. Free speech has never been protected by law only punished by it as that’s how the UK system works, also who extatically is stopping you from talking to a nationally printed publication? This victimisation you covet all because you want to say the N word and not get told that’s not fucking on. GROW UP

  10. > “You don’t have free speech in the UK anymore,” she says, in a nod to the so-called cancellation of public figures like JK Rowling and the introduction of the 2010 Equality Act, which she calls a “catastrophe”.

    > “[On free speech laws], I believe that it should be illegal to incite violence — that’s kind of the end of it,” she says.

I don’t know what legal restrictions on speech the Equality Act imposed (or she believes it imposed): but isn’t the “cancellation” of J. K. Rowling et al. just other people exercising their own free speech?

  11. She says freely in a national newspaper with no fear of being arrested for doing so.

  12. People crying about being silenced in their national newspaper articles will never not be funny but also really depressing that people actually fall for this grift.

  13. The very definition of a boomer, what with flying to live in New York for the summer (and presumably owning at least two house to do this), just because that’s where her favourite tennis partner lives.

  14. “I AM BEING SILENCED”, person says from newspaper headline.

    Yawn.

  15. Honestly, anyone screaming that free speech doesn’t exist in a newspaper article should be forced to undergo a psychiatric check for brain damage.

  16. That’s a class A freeze peach compo face there, well done.

Oh there’s a bit of promo in there too.

“Mania, her next fiction novel due out in April, is set in an alternative recent past and is all about a life-long friendship that is threatened by a fictional culture war in which so-called “stupid people” cannot be discriminated against.”

Maybe she should have called it “People get pissed off when I’m a bit of a prick and I don’t like that – a novel.”

  17. Yet another right wing twat confusing free speech with a lack of accountability.

  18. This entire comment section full of people saying *very* similar things, over and over again

    Not sus at all 👀

  19. Oh, let me take a wild guess knowing nothing about a solution: someone with anti-trans views has been given a platform in prominent news media to complain how much they’re being “silenced” because people don’t want to platform them. Did I get that right?

  20. Can’t even say you’re English without being thrown in jail…
