  1. Overall, during August and September several thousand civilians, mostly Serbs from the Syrmia region, were brutally murdered by the Ustaše in several locations in Sremska Mitrovica and surrounding towns in what was at the time the puppet Independent State of Croatia. The precise numbers are still being debated, but the postwar committee excavated in late May 1945 2180 bodies alone from the mass grave at the Mitrovica orthodox cemetery. The event that started it all was the arrival of Ustaše Provost Marshal Viktor Tomić to Sremska Mitrovica on August 26th, 1942, who had come from Vukovar to take over the city’s military administration.

  2. unbelievable, such barbarism.

Most sources list the number of Serbs killed to be 2,000-3,000 while the German Wehrmacht lists up to 7,000 victims for the period of August to early September 1942.[8] Several hundred prisoners were also taken to the Jasenovac concentration camp.[9] The German military described the massacres as “slaughter and sadistic riots”.[10]

    very beatyful pictures from Sava
