Still using the ‘stop the boats’ bullshit narrative to strip any form of protection the public has against these megalomaniacs. Unironically, things like this get them votes.
All talk, the Tories will never seriously consider leaving the ECHR.
Guaranteed this will be what the tories campaign the 2029 election on (and I think they’ll win).
They’ll say leaving the ECHR will make
It easier to remove immigrants and remove trans rights
Tories are talking about leaving the European Convention on Human Rights, because they don’t agree with its principles. They might include it in their 2024 Manifesto.
The ECHR sets out the basic rights for everybody. They are…
The right to life
The right to a fair hearing
The right to have your private and family life protected
The right to free speech, free thought and expression
Freedom of conscience
Freedom of religion
Freedom from torture and inhumane or degrading punishment
Freedom from forced labour
Freedom from arbitrary or unlawful detention
Freedom from discrimination
Please email your tory MP and ask them which of those rights they disagree with.
Says it, will do fuck all about it
All fart no shit, the Tories on immigration for the last 13 years.
That is impossible without leaving the European Convention on Human Rights, which would be extremely damaging even if you agree with Mrs. Braverman’s ideas. Even if you think that removing these safeguards protecting your human rights from a system that has no practical limits on the power of legislative pluralities is a good idea, there are various complications:
Secondly, both the Withdrawal Agreement and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement the UK signed with the EU are explicitly predicated on the UK upholding current human right treaties. The [TCA](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:22021A0430(01)) even spells it out that large parts of the treaty (the ones on data, privacy, law enforcement cooperation, …) will be terminated immediately if either party leaves the ECHR (e.g. Article 692).
Leaving the ECHR will therefore make it much harder to secure the UK’s borders, or to enforce its laws. It will destabilize Northern Ireland. It will also cause enormous political, diplomatic and economic damage. Mrs. Bravermand’s position is sheer lunacy even if you discount the risk to your own human and civic rights.
“I would like to strip you of your rights,” is an amazing platform for a government standing for election next year.
I really hope that I’m not being naive when I think that most people will be against having their rights taken away rather than saying, “I don’t mind if they take my rights away from me if the upshot is that it would make it easier for them to mistreat refugees.”
What a piece of tool she is. I hope this shitty request will not succeed.

Firstly, the Good Friday Agreement requires the UK to remain part of the ECHR. Specifically, article 5 of the [GFA](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1034123/The_Belfast_Agreement_An_Agreement_Reached_at_the_Multi-Party_Talks_on_Northern_Ireland.pdf) mandates the implementation of the ECHR in Northern Irish law whereas article 1 of the [ECHR](https://www.echr.coe.int/documents/d/echr/Convention_ENG) states that the treaty must be binding in the entire jurisdiction of the parties signed up to it. I.e. you can’t leave the ECHR and uphold the GFA.
