Does anyone know why the New Chief (and previous ones) of the Cyprus’ National Guard have always been from Greece?

Apparently they are also appointed from the Greek Minister of Defense.

  1. actually its not only the chief, a big chunk of the national guard is made of greeks.

  2. At some point I tried researching if that has always been the case and I thought I found some cases when that wasn’t true. But I could be wrong

The reason was because the National Guard was established in 1964 at a time when the GC political elite-Government of the Republic of Cyprus had as a goal enosis-union with Greece(unfortunately there are resolutions of the Parliament of the time actually saying that). The Constitution provided the establishment of the Cypriot Army compromised by people of both communities but it was it only lasted 3 years. Ofc none of these really explain why this practice is still continued today. Same thing happens in the north, the chief is always from Turkey appointed by the Government of Turkey. The problem is the north is occupied and is under the effective control of Turkish troops. The Republic of Cyprus is an independent state…

  3. Because we didn’t have GCs with the qualifications for such high positions. This is the reason that the last decade the second in command is a GC, as they are candidates that fulfill the requirements.

The Greek Minister of Defense send a list with 3 names, with recently retired, and the Cyprus Government choose from that list.
