Plans being drawn up for ‘two-week lockdown and ban on indoor mixing’ – reports

  1. It does feel like he’s prioritising his own, now time limited, career over public health which in turn will further negatively impact the economy because he knows “party gate” means he can’t bring in measures before Christmas for fear of being termed hypocritical.

  2. I wonder if this will mean the return of closure of non-essential retail, funding schemes and return of furlough…

Seems like it would not be a “lockdown” as we knew it last year, by the sounds of it, it’ll just be being told we can’t have people over.

  3. Two weeks isn’t long, but it could be dragged out or push into another one a couple of weeks later. If this is the route what is the point of booster vaccines if the majority of people aren’t mixing. By time we mix properly again booster vaccine cover will be wearing off.

The real issue is they don’t know how or don’t want to solve the staffing crisis in the NHS, keeping us locked up isn’t a solution.

  4. I’ve followed every rule almost to the letter. I’m not going to claim I was perfect, but my rule breaking was “a walk with 3 people, not just 1” that sort of stuff.

But no more. I have given up nearly 2 years of my early 30s because they couldn’t be bothered investing properly in hospital infrastructure.

Covid isn’t going away. If we intend to find a natural balance to live with it, then at some point, we have to actually live with it. Get all your vaccines. Use a bit of common sense. Get on with life.

  5. I just don’t see how they can now. If they implement social restrictions before Christmas they’ll look like massive hypocrites. If they wait until after Christmas it’ll look like they risked public health for their own embarrassment. If they make restrictions guidance rather than law, businesses with suffer without financial help. If they make restrictions law rather than guidance, the police don’t really have the power to do anything about people breaking those laws. The whole thing is fucked up now just because they thought they deserved a party. But… he’s trying his best.

  6. Can’t wait for all the “as it’s only two weeks, I support it” and the “it’s only two weeks, it’s a pandemic, don’t be a wimp” gangs to run rampant all over Reddit

  7. Shout out to all the councils that ripped out al fresco dining after the summer so cars could drive down tiny streets again. How’s that helping hospitality these days?

  8. Yaaay, I get to fucking worry about my cash because I’m a zero hour contract waiter and january is gonna to be fucking dead. It likely means I’ll have to rely on DWP and Universal credit. Yeaaaaaaaaaaay.

    This was angry snark.

If they announce it on christmas eve, like the cowards that they are, I’ll be fucking pissed off. I seriously doubt they’ll return furlough because it’ll give peasents like me a chance to well, not starve.

  9. Does anyone know what this might mean for travel? I feel slightly selfish but I’ve got a family holiday booked for late Jan and I’m starting to feel a bit nervous. We’re meant to be heading to the States.

  10. This time last year, Hancock was crying over the vaccine coming out and Boris was saying we were on the irreversible road to freedom. Now, an entire year and 3 vaccine shots later, we’re in the same position. WHAT WAS THE POINT?

  11. Mixing isn’t the issue, you have the entire country open for business. Incoming air travel, schools open, business open

And when we locked down before, it didn’t even get rid of COVID, it’s still there.

This won’t actually accomplish anything. The only protection we can really rely on is the vaccination program

  12. I’m not an anti-vaxx knob or a “covid is a hoax” tit.

However, we are going to have to learn to live with this. We can’t keep shutting ourselves away. Covid is here to stay.

  13. Banning indoor meetings and keeping schools open makes no sense. 30-200+ people in a room is a recipe for spreading the virus.

  14. Do people not realize tighter restrictions will do nothing to help further vaccine uptake? They are literally trying to convince people to take more vaccines while simultaneously saying they do virtually nothing since we still need to lockdown after a “mild” variant.

  15. As an aside, most recent cases I’m aware of have come from children in school. With the 10 day isolation, they should have closed the schools a week early for the Christmas holidays, that way it would have given those isolating a chance to be clear for Christmas Day. Any infected child returning home after breaking up on Friday has spannered any family Christmas Day get together.

  16. Since what Matt Hancock got up to last year the government can go fuck themselves. I’ll take various precautions to keep those around me safe but I’m not following any “plans” these tossers make.

  17. Rant Incoming…

To begin with the vaccine was never designed or meant to get rid of covid-19.

This was just Boris and his mates talking a load bollocks as per usual and media letting them get away with it.

Its done a tremendous amount of damage in regards to increasing vaccine skeptism.

The vaccine primary aim was to reduce deaths caused by Covid-19 and to reduce transmission rates.

In regards to reducing deaths it has been a stunning success.

In regards to reducing transmission, until Omicron it was doing a great job.

Nothing will ever get rid of Covid-19 just like nothing will ever get rid of Influenza.

Its always been about reducing deaths and transmission rates.

    Now onto SAGE.

Put yourself in their position, you know if you get it wrong the Government and Media is going to put 100% of the blame on you.

    So what do you do?

Do you play it safe and advise measures that whilst will fuck the economy, put people out of jobs and increase the number of mental health issues but it ultimately save more lives or do you say fuck it and advise minimum measures and let it rip through the population knowing that it will overload the NHS and increase the number of not only covid-19 deaths but non-covid-19 deaths?

Just look at the hit pieces the media has out on some of the members of SAGE, it’s utterly disgusting.

People need to wake up that the Number 1 problem we have as a country is that the Tories have spent last decade gutting the NHS.

There are than 36,000 NHS nursing vacancies according to the most recent data published.

Don’t think that number is purely because of the Pandemic and Brexit although both have played their part, Since 2015 there have been over 25,000 NHS Nursing Vacancies every year.

As for Doctors, there currently over 10,000 NHS vacancies.

We have one of the lowest Doctor to patient ratios in Europe, only 4 countries come in lower which are Ireland, Slovenia, Romania and Poland.

Had we had even half of these vacancies filled the capacity of the NHS would be significantly higher and we wouldn’t be in this position.

The problem isn’t that vaccine isn’t working because it is and fantastically well at that, it’s because the Tories have gutted the NHS to such a degree that it was always going take very little to stretch it beyond breaking point.

Even if the Pandemic did not happen, a particularly bad flu season would of devastating.

I don’t want any restrictions at all but I also don’t want people dying when their lives could of been saved because there are no beds available or because they are stuck in an ambulance outside A&E for hours.

Its easy to say we shouldn’t have any restrictions until your loved is involved in a car accident and their isn’t any ambulances available or A&E is overloaded.

We are in this god awful situation because of the Tories and their horrendous management of the NHS and if you voted for the Tories then you need to take on some of the responsibility that the country finds itself in.

  18. There’s no way this plan is actually for two weeks. Restriction proponents are just saying that to make it sound more acceptable. They will want those restrictions to stay there for months, like last time.

Covid is endemic now, there will always be new variants coming in from abroad, we can’t have a society that is always on the brink of being shut down. Throw money at increasing NHS capacity, and since staff are the critical resource, (i) make their pay and conditions better to attract more (bonus points if it makes them eligible for immigration) and (ii) invest in automation to reduce staff needs, e.g. you shouldn’t need staff to administer oxygen and monitor whether it’s working, which is the reason Covid patients end up in the ICU.

  19. Stopping people meeting up where there are windows to open, masks and tests to do yet allow the places with most spread to continue such as warehouses, factories, store rooms, food processing plants and shops where noone wears masks the ventilation is shit and many people are in close contact. Not to mention carehomes have the most outbreaks. More nonsense policies for optics.

  20. Purely anecdotal, but I have tickets to a small gig in London in January and it’s been postponed indefinitely. The band have postponed their entire European tour. I feel like it’s starting all over again.

  21. I FUCKING CALLED IT.

Willing to bet that the government won’t reintroduce furlough and will expect businesses to cough up the bill.

  22. We stuck to the rules last year and didn’t see family. My wife didn’t see her grandfather. He died of a heart attack in January, because he didn’t want to both the NHS with a sore arm and chest. I’ll be fucked if we are following any rules on Christmas Day this year.

  23. I’m not following any indoor mixing bans. Fuck that. I will have been triple jabbed by the end of today and have been masking up in busy places regardless of it being law or not. Tired of putting my life on hold for the sole benefit of people I don’t know and then having to pay for the economic damage through tax and price rises when this eventually ends.

I’d rather be in lockdown forever than this pseudo-freedom thing where you’re not actually allowed to do anything but it’s not technically a lockdown because

And I get why lockdowns have to happen obviously, but what if another one doesn’t even bring R to 1 or what do they expect to happen when they open things back up again

  24. Piss off, we have two family get togethers planned between Xmas and new year. We’ve all scheduled LFTs, we’ve all been vaccinated and had or about to have our boosters and none of us are in high risk groups. And this prick wants to tell us we can’t go? Pretty sure the majority of the problem is London and the south east at the moment?

How many like us are just gonna say fuck it, were gonna do it anyway?

  25. Seems poor policy now and just a bandaid. [This is the latest surveillance report that shows carehomes, workplaces and education the major areas of outbreaks.](https://i.imgur.com/h2Ed1nN.jpg)
That carehomes are still getting many outbreaks is surprising considering the preventative measures they have.
Education breaks up for a few weeks soon so less will occur there, workplaces I think need tightening up. [Mandate N95 masks for suitable work place settings imo, once thebl businesses have to shell out for PPe they’ll soon have people working from home](https://uwaterloo.ca/news/media/study-supports-widespread-use-better-masks-curb-covid-19)
Reduce the loop holes for ‘essential businesses’. Businesses can’t cry when they are restricted, when they are not doing enough to slow the spread when they are not.

Also it seems like chasing our tail as we try and stop covid positive patients yet many are incidental positives.

  26. Closing hospitality will just encourage more house parties. Very few will follow the no indoor mixing rule and I can’t imagine it being enforced anyway. Plus surely the damage has already been done

  27. The Government has zero legitimacy to implement this. The police have zero legitimacy to enforce it. Anyone keeping up with current domestic affairs know this. What’s the plan to achieve compliance again?

  28. It’s obvious Johnson hasn’t got a fucking clue & has learned nothing.
The way the new virus Omicron is spreading, surely having a lockdown after Christmas is like throwing a hand grenade into a room and saying “fuck it, I’ll clean it up later”!!

  29. There’s been a protest in London today and I didn’t see it on BBC news anywhere – I had to look for it on local london news and only as I heard someone on the train watching a news video.

  30. This has absolutely broken me. I am now 100% certain that things will never get better. Every winter, there will be a new variant, new pressure on the NHS, new travel restrictions and a new lockdown. I just can’t cope anymore. I’m 21. I did everything right for the last two years. I got my jabs, I followed the rules of the first couple of lockdowns.

It’s really gotten to the point where I don’t see myself living much longer. I’ve had enough. My formative social years have already been obliterated and now I know I have nothing more to look forward to. It’s just so fucking miserable.
