They exceeded my expectations. Late spring when they were finishing up the combined arms training and talking about using combined arms assault for the southern offensive, I keep asking myself, what about the minefields? What about the minefields? And I thought, ok, they must know what they’re talking about, let’s just assume they hit them hard enough, they get through. Yeah, run at them like they were taught. But still… what about the minefields?
Turned out, the minefields were a hard no for armored assault. That’s when my expectations went to about zero. Then they exceeded my expectations… how? By picking their way slowly through the mines by hand, with considerable loss of life, but they did it because they had to. Almost unimaginable, the determination and sacrifice. Now my expectations are a lot higher, and I hope they exceed them again.
