Paris is set to retire its last for-hire electric scooter as it becomes the first major European capital to ban rental vehicles from its streets.
Operators Lime, Dott and Tier had been given a September 1 deadline to withdraw their estimated 15,000 e-scooters from the French capital.
The restriction only applies to rental units, with Parisians still allowed to ride privately-owned e-scooters.
The move comes after nearly 90 per cent of voters backed a blanket ban on the rental scooters in a spring referendum.
Anne Hidalgo, the city’s mayor and a vocal opponent of the units, pledged to honour the outcome of the vote, which saw around 103,000 people cast ballots.
Companies pointed out that the turnout represented fewer than 10 per cent of those eligible to vote.
They also argued Paris would fall out of step with other cities that have launched and expanded their mode of transport, such as London, Liverpool and Newcastle in the UK, where the vehicles are being trialled.
But officials have pressed ahead with the ban on the e-scooters, or trottinettes, closing the chapter on a controversial five-year run for the technology in the city.
Splendid!! Hope it will serve as a good example for other cities. The problem with these things is the business model.
Maybe if they punished their customers for leaving, them in places that cause trouble for others, this wouldn’t have happened. A year ago, my wife saved blind person from tripping on one of those because it was left in the middle of the pavement.
I’m going to give you feedback because I want this sub to come back to its former glory. From your username, I’m assuming it’s ok to be blunt. This is honestly such boring, low-effort content. It’s not useful or interesting. At the very least, focus on a continent that isn’t Europe. We’re so oversaturated with Euro-centric content here. Do something that teaches us something useful or interesting. Tell us about Africa’s religious changes over time. Tell us about Asia’s GDP growth. Tell us about South America’s favorite pasttimes. Please, for the love of all that is good, stop telling us about European flags. Go learn something cool and come back and tell us about it.
Aren’t they banned in the entire Netherlands already?
Unfathomably based move. E-scooters are fair game
I can’t describe with words how much I hate when some imbecile rides these things at 50km/h on the sidewalk or constantly switch between the roads and the pedestrians
In Denmark they didnt get banned, but a law was made that you have to wear a helmet when using them (and other “small motorised vehicles”), which took a lot of gas from the market (at least in the cities I have my goings in).
You can still use them instead of a bike or your own, but the companies have no incentive to leave a ton of them around, since you dont bring a helmet with you on the off chance you want the scooter on your way home
Paris is European now? Since when?
This seems like a step backwards in terms of being environmentally friendly
Thank God. Paris really hasn’t benefitted from the explosion of these in recent years.
In my city (Salzburg, Austria), the rental companies have never received a permit for this reason.
This is so stupid. In Porto Portugal you can only leave e-scooters behind on designated spots. You can’t stop the payment anywhere else. This is a better option than banning it.
I saw tourist twitch streamers use these and tbh it was a recipe for chaos.

Errh, Paris is not first.
They were [banned by the city council in Copenhagen](https://ekstrabladet-dk.translate.goog/nyheder/samfund/elloebehjul-forbydes-i-koebenhavn/8321925?_x_tr_sl=da&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=da&_x_tr_pto=wapp) in October 2020.
Around the same time, they were also [declared illegal by the police](https://www-dr-dk.translate.goog/nyheder/penge/ulovlige-elloebehjul-fjernes-fra-gaden-i-koebenhavn?_x_tr_sl=da&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=da&_x_tr_pto=wapp). I assume this ban was countrywide.
They were one year later [unbanned in Copenhagen](https://www-kk-dk.translate.goog/nyheder/udlejningsloebehjul-er-paa-vej-tilbage-i-koebenhavn-men-med-vaesentlige-begraensninger?_x_tr_sl=da&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=da&_x_tr_pto=wapp), with stricter requirements for their usage. I don’t know what happen to the police’s position.
