So this year I became a greek citizen officially. And as a present im being presented with some dumb drama from my family on my dads side in greece.
So essentially I had some 38 year old cousin die of a heart attack. I’ve never met her before, and from my understanding she never paid into her EFTA/Pension. She owes 30,000 Euros to the greek state (supposedly), but it also doesn’t make sense because in Canada at least if you don’t pay into the pension you don’t recieve a pension (but I also understand that EFTA and Pension is tied to your health care)
So apparently my aunt’s and uncles on my fathers side, include the deceased’s husband and kids have denied the debt. Now they are going after the aunts and uncles and then going after the cousins if noone takes the responsibility of the debt. My father has called me everyday for the last month about this, and called the consulate here in Canada which asked him to write an email (which he doesnt know how to do)
Now I have entered every greek string of sentences into google to find info if this is a real thing, and I have found 0 information, whether or not for some reason not paying into EFTA means you owe a debt (I’m also assuming efta is withdrawn automatically from your paychecks?) and whether or not the debt gets passed on to another generation.
After calling the consulate myself they did tell me that Greek state debts can chase after family, but I don’t think the understood me well. Then I asked them what document my cousins/aunts are signing to not take on the responsibility of the debt and they have 0 knowledge on this. They informed me to call the office they are dealing with (she died in Yiannina, so they have been going to some office in Agrinio even though we are from Peleponeso) and to have the documents sent to the consulate here in Vancouver.
I’ve explained this to my dad several times that the Greek Consulate is the GREEK GOVERNMENT, and if we are being asked to pay or deny a debt from the GREEK GOVERNMENT that I can do any of the papers at the GREEK GOVERNMENT OFFICE. He does not to seem to understand this. [This is what the consulate sent me when I originally emailed them.](https://i.imgur.com/9p0Fhdi.png) He does not have access to half these documents, and for some reason now my aunt is sending him my cousins death certificate.
**εγώ έμαθα καινούριο λέξη και το λένε πληρεξούσιο, και θέλω να σκοτώσω τον πατέρα μου κάθε φορά που ακούω αυτή τη λέξη**. I don’t think my father understands what power of attorney is and i’m not letting him do this. He has been yelling at me daily, spamming my phone to get this done.
Everytime I send a message to my cousins regarding this debt, they can’t give me any info and claim that I Have to “go to greece” to get it done, because they refuse to send it to the consulate.
Is there any efta office I can contact? I am fluent in greek, but legal speak might make it difficult.
Thank you for the help.
(answers in greek are ok)
