The French government will block five widely watched pornography websites unless they introduce measures to verify that users are aged over 18, officials have said.
The move brings France into line with Germany in taking action against sites that fail to prevent children from accessing adult content.
The two countries have some of the strictest rules in the developed world for tackling the issue. By contrast, child safety groups in Britain have denounced what they say is the government’s failure to impose effective age-verification measures for adult sites.
France’s Higher Audiovisual Council has given the sites Pornhub, xHamster, Xvideos, XNXX and Tukif until today to comply with a law introduced last year that makes age verification compulsory for adult content.
The council said the sites were breaking the law by doing no more than asking users to click on a box saying they were over 18. “Children faced by such content can suffer lasting shock at the very least,” it said. If effective verification was not implemented, it said, it would ask a judge to block the sites.
Age-assurance measures can include demanding a photograph or an identity document, or checking bank accounts, credit cards or mobile phone contracts. The verification procedure is generally undertaken by a specialist company.
Justine Atlan, director of the child safety association e-Enfance, said: “It is important to put pornography sites under pressure so they cannot continue to flout the legal framework to which they have themselves agreed.”
I am all in for protecting the children, but there is also a right for privacy when it comes to this kind of… activities. There is no way I am giving any for of ID or bank details to these websites.
I don’t know man.
Parents have some duty to protect/teach their kids too. You just have to use one of the widely available internet filters and your kids won’t be able to browse porn.
Kids will get the habits of using VPN early I guess, that’s a plus.
Kids will just go on creepier and unmonitored websites. Idk how i feel about this
So the “are you 18 or older” click box is no longer viable?
>To successfully pass an acceptable age check, users would have to provide some form of verifiable identity document, or other personal information such as bank accounts, credit cards or mobile phone contracts.
Ha no, fuck that. I already have trouble with junk mail asking me if I need penis enlargements. The last thing I want is being cold called and pamphlets being delivered to my door.
Get a vpn folks
I mean it is not that hard to create 18+ reddit/google accounts is google banned to? Is reddit going to be banned to?
Is it voiding the responsibility of parents?

How innocent. Meanwhile, 9999999 other sites are available. Also various forms of VPN.

Well, that’s ironic. Let’s roll the clock back a bit.

Hey I have a question. On one of those type of site which is banned in France, obviously I cannot go on it , either with my 4g or with WiFi. Except with the WiFi of my apartment. I don’t know why when I’m using the WiFi of my apartment I can go on it , eventhough my ip adress should still be in France. Does someone has an explanation? Because with other WiFi it does not work
Create virtual credit card (privacy.com or your bank, or whatever), have them “validate” you, then cancel that card.
Modern problems require modern solutions!
Guess they’re gonna block reddit too then or even twitter? Such a rule has always been a farce and almost everyone knows it
Tell me French legislators understand fuck all about the internet without telling me French legislators understand fuck all about the internet.
I mean the boomer ignorance was endearing in the 90s, but legislators being this clueless at this point is just sad and scary.
The age of consent in france is 15. So teenagers between 15 and 18 going at it is fine but those same teenagers wathing porn isn’t? Makes sense yea.
just use captcha with tax questions, schools don’t teach that and kids definitely don’t learn about it in spare time 😂
Ah, Tories tried to bring this in a few years ago. Realised how unworkable it was and cancelled the idea.
Here in Germany, they do block sites over DNS.
It already started with copyright violating websites they cannot take down. So at next they will do the same with porn. Time after time, they will add more and more “unwanted” content to their list.
Good thing is, as long as there are still DNS providers available without blocking lists, it is easy to unblock. But there is a court ruling which makes the DNS service Quad9 responsible for routing copyright violating websites…
“This bill is sponsored by Nord VPN”
The irony is that this will mostly affect the elderly/boomers browsing those sites who don’t know how to circumvent it lol.
Especially when they actually fill in their personal info and or banking details to those sites who are KNOWN for their amazing cybersecurity! Absolutely NO way this will backfire whatsoever… 😂

Oi mon ami, do you have your se masturber license?
eu: we should protect our personal data, right to privacy, gdpr etc
also eu: give all of the big corps and porn sites your id to access them
bruh, how moronic are they?
VPNs are gonna have a field day outta that one.
If there are any sites that shouldn’t have access to user data, it’s porn sites. Well, right after Facebook.
But who’s porn for, if not puberty stricken teenagers? If you’re worried about misinformation, provide better information, instead of promoting the idea that sex is worse than violence or religion.
If you’re gonna have youth unemployment so high you gotta at least have porn. What else are folks gonna do otherwise??
So why is it okay for TV stations to show adult content without any age verification, but now for websites it’s not?
Also, what are parents for nowadays, anyways?
the only thing this will do is teach teens early on to use a vpn, or get their porn from non porn specific sources.
They have enough time to figure a way out to work around the blockade, and making it forbidden is only gonna make it more interesting to that age group.
Article mentions that Germany is also going ahead with this bullshit along with France, odd how this story has got barely a whisper of traction while similar stories started entire internet memes.
So we’ll just go watch porn elsewhere.
Worst case scenario we’ll all become furries.
Blocking porn sites have never worked
Banning porn website is the new prohibition, can’t wait to have our own Al Capote.
So age of consent is 15 (can go down to 13) but age of watching porno is 18? Priorities are kinda mixed up
I can’t wait for a hacker to release detailed lists of pornos every polititian has watched.
-_- …really? Can they enforce that at all?
people already not providing IDs for the stupid ass youtube, and they think people will provide IDs for porn sites? lol
and how do hey think to filter out multiple users that uses one public IP address?
