Does this system of so many small health insurance companies have a future or is this going the American way where many people can’t afford health insurance?

Not to defend the raise but to your question:
health insurance is mandatory so people will always have to pay it. Cantons offer Subsidies though that make it more afforable and for example in Lucerne, they limit that the cost shouldn’t be higher than 10% of your monthly net income after deductions.
