Following the end of the Finnish civil war, the recently appointed regent Mannerheim invited artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela as an adjutant of the state to design uniforms and state decorations for what was to become the Kingdom of Finland. However, due to changing geopolitics (namely the end of the German Empire) the kingdom never came to fruition and most of Gallen-Kallela’s designs did neither.
