I’m not sure why it would should be considered “less biased” to have voters in certain areas (those with more non-voters) have their votes worth more (in terms of MPs per voter) than in other areas (those with fewer non-voters). I don’t see why I should get a weightier vote because, say, I live in an area with lots of big families/children.
If this had not biased the 2010 election outcomes, then we could have avoided the whole 13 year shitshow. No Osbourne, and so no austerity; no lost decade of zero growth, falling wages, decaying services and rising inequality, and ultimately no Brexit. No May and no racist policies at the home office. No Johnson, and no unnecessary covid deaths and no debasement of institutions and public life by unpunished lying and corruption. No Truss/Kwarteng and no £100 billion loss. No Sunak and his 12 months of bed-blocking. All this could have been avoided if even this one aspect of the electoral system were made fair.
I’m not saying there wouldn’t have been other fuckups, but I think most of the UK would rather go back 13 years and re-roll the dice – we’re unlikely to roll another nat 1.
