Brexit: farmers warn ‘days of cheap food are over’

  1. When was food cheap? I’m genuinely asking, not in my lifetime.

  2. I’ve seen many reports over the years showing that our food is a bit cheaper than most of Europe, and much cheaper than USA. This is for the average “basket” obviously individual items differ. Also many foods, especially meats and dairy, are far cheaper now (adjusted for inflation) than they were in the last century thanks to mass production processes. Supermarkets with their massive power over the market have squeezed farmers tighter and tighter (which has pushed efficiency tbf) but we’re at the point where farmers can’t afford for their margins to go any lower – many are having to just sell up completely. Add to that all the new red tape on exports and the potentially less regulated and therefore cheaper imports from new trade deals around the world… farmers are screwed. The point is we don’t realise how good we’ve had it up to now with food prices. If prices don’t go up we’ll end up losing all of our farmers.
