The insistence on infantilizing and giving less credence to young people’s knowledge of Irish history by a lot of Irish media personalities, as well as politicians, is so disrespectful.
It’s obviously only done because they refuse to have hard conversations about the way in which those in Northern Ireland are treated, and have been treated, by the Republic of Ireland establishment throughout the entirety of the British Occupation of Northern Ireland.
Up the ra,dio
Shane Coleman is a hysterical, hand wringing agenda fanny. Feel embarrassed for his sons. Maude Flanders incarnate
Theyre drunk and probably high on some other substance, there to have a good time. Leave them off for christs sake.
>Shane said there is a “worrying and dangerous” view that has taken hold that there was “no alternative” to The Troubles and that it was a “great and glorious war”
It definitely wasn’t glorious, but were catholics in Northern Ireland meant to just put up with the oppression and discrimination? They tried peaceful protest and got attacked and shot at
What alternative was there?
>[“I’m not sure that they differentiate between the provisional IRA and the old IRA and all the things that maybe we did because that was where we were from.”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPzQtvWCtG8)
I was there, sober. When I say people flocked at Speed to get there its because they wanted to be there. As soon as Rick Astly finished people literally ran to get a spot. I left after 3/4 songs because the sound was awful outside the tent and extremely claustrophobic and hot inside.
West Brits being West brits never change Newstalk
Do the Wolfetones sing much about the Troubles? Like as far as rebel music goes, the Wolfetones are fairly tame, bordering mainstream. Wasn’t at EP but I’ve seen them enough that I can guess some of their setlist- Sean South, Boys of the Old Brigade, Streets of New York, Come Out Ye Black and Tans, Patriot Game, Grace…. none of these songs are about the Troubles or the PIRA.
I could see a possible issue if Electric Picnic had the likes of The Irish Brigade playing, but there should be zero issues with the Wolfe Tones.
It’s just the Wolfe Tones being absorbed into the market like everything else.
People would sing along to Ra songs and Zombie by the Cranberries back to back without any irony. They’re just great to sing drunk or otherwise.
I can’t believe that a brief, daytime radio discussion didn’t take into account the nuances and difficulties of discussing historical issues that have not been resolved in hundreds of years.
Surprise surprise it’s Shane Coleman again…
Shane Coleman is a complete wet wipe, singing about your history isn’t a crime, these are actual historic events,
The commentariat love the whole “young people didn’t live through it” spiel (which is obviously true), but just because the Troubles happened during your lifetime doesn’t necessarily mean you lived through it. The same people have a habit of diminishing the real life, lived experience of nationalists during the same time
Anti republican shite from a member of the Irish media.
Shocking… 🙄
F*ck Shane Coleman
Shane Coleman is pushing a political narrative aimed to influence a very specific agenda for a “supposedly” center right party. Celebrating the fact that the Irish freedom fighters forced the British to retreat, does not fit their narrative.
We are much better off, and happier, as a nation. Specially when you contrast that to the British controlled Norther Ireland.
Let the young folk celebrate and stop with the scorn and fearmongering.
Here’s a thought. How about they bring on people that actually did experience the Troubles instead of talking down to young people about their own sheltered experience of the Troubles as if they know any better.
Is it not revisionist to try to stop people singing songs about actual events, the majority of the songs which were written in the early 1900s? They got super popular because of the Football controversy that saw a few young girls spoken down to on UK tv, nobody stood up for those girls at the time & this is the result.
Really hits home this excerpt.
“All across this ancient land
Throughout the test of time
It was music that kept their spirits free
Those songs of yours and of mine “
It’s almost as if certain mindsets feel Irish self rule is wrong.
The Wolfe Tones represent the spirit of Irish freedom and pride.
Irish people like to sing along to songs about being proud to be Irish? Shocking stuff.
this is really a non problem
Genuinely I’ve no problem, people having a good time, sing away.
I do have issues with the double standards though. If it’s okay to sing “oh ah up the ra” then surely it’s okay for loyalists to sing about the ‘”sash” or whatever that song is.
Can’t people just enjoy a bit of deed-ellee-dee without someone bringing up the troubles
Irish media have always had it against our own history. Same as the government, they don’t like a population knowing that rebellion against the status quo gets results.

There’s a great podcast where danny morrison debates mick clifford over some of the issues around the troubles. Its also free if anyone wants to give it a listen. https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/the-mick-clifford-podcast/id1479184171?i=1000625594672
