WHO warns Omicron could overwhelm health systems as cases rise to record highs in Europe

  1. What use has WHO been during the pandemic? Individual countries and the EU have done an excellent job keeping track of cases, hospitalisations etc. and the implications for health services. It seems that after countries have made their own announcements, WHO then just trots out the same message.

Then there are the WHO’s bizarre takes on things. When western countries ban travellers from other western countries because data indicate it is necessary, we all just suck it up and get on with it. However, when countries banned travellers from Southern Africa in response to Omicron, WHO gets indignant and censorious about it, amplifying African countries calling it travel apartheid.

Is WHO actually doing anything practical to help during all this?
