My experience in Malta so far

  1. I’m expecting to catch some heat for this, but so far I’ve been absolutely stunned by the sheer amount of garbage everywhere. Even in the less tourist-y areas? How is it possible that a beach (Rinella Bay or something like that), roughly 20 meters long, has like 6 garbage bins on it and is still absolutely fucking packed with trash?

  2. Welcome to the land where bins mean nothing 🤗

  3. Ugh i hate people. Like why the fuck would anyone have a softener bottle out there? It barely takes any effort to have a garbage bag with you when you go out to picnic or bbq amd pick up after yourself …

  4. A lot of people are just selfish assholes. Doesn’t help that there isn’t really any punishment either. If people won’t clean up out of their own decency, make them do it out of their own pocket. (fine the fuckers and jail them if they don’t learn!)

  5. Same here after 15 years; partially beautiful partially full of shit 😊

  6. Maltese government seems to bend over backwards for tourism. Maybe if more tourists complained like this, *maybe* the government will consider correcting it?

And that’s a big fat *maybe*.

  7. In another thread people were bringing all kinds of excuses denying this lol and downvoting anyone saying this is a real issue.

I’m sorry this is your experience but it’s a sad way of life here. Convenience over everything else.

  8. You’re right. Unfortunately it’s a constant problem which is not enforced at all, even in supposedly protected sites. This refers to both normal trash, and construction waste (terrapien) everywhere – take the Birzebbuga Natura 2000 site for instance.

There are several organisations that organize clean-ups every month (Nadur Nadif is a great Gozitan/Comino one for instance), and some student societies within the University of Malta do so as well. It would be good and more beneficial if people join these events to help out as well
