  1. Road safety…When are you going to fix the 6 month NCT delays government ?

  2. People ignore the speed limit anyway so… 🤷‍♂️

  3. ‘We can’t police the roads, so take longer to get everywhere please. We insist on continuing making driving as unpleasant as possible’.

  4. > It follows the recent rise in road fatalities after twice the number of people lost their lives on Irish roads last month compared to August 2022.

So are we saying those recent accidents occurred whilst people were driving at/under the current speed limit and therefore those limits are too high?

Seems pointless to lower limits to me when many people ignore them anyway. There’s a variable speed limit in operation on the M50 and I don’t think I’ve seen the majority of drivers follow those once so far if traffic is clear.

  5. Why don’t local councils adjust black spots as required based on statistics instead of blanket bans on speed?

Also, crashes are indeed extremely sad. But I don’t understand why the coverage for a single incident is the first piece of news on national tv for over a week….

  6. “It would see speed capped at 80km/h on national secondary roads where the limit currently stands at 100km/h.

The limit on local and rural roads would drop from 80km/h to 60km/h.

Within towns, cities and residential areas there would be a limit of 30km/h, while roads on the fringes of urban areas could be capped at 50km/h”

So then an increase in journey times esp in certain parts of country where most roads are secondary national roads, the potential for dual carriageway ring roads to be 50km/h

I live in Waterford and the ring road is four lanes with concrete separation, the idea of this being 50 feels nonsensical.

  7. So an inter-city journey would take 4 hours instead of 3? Sounds freaking amazing

  8. Absolutely no need to drop from 50 to 30 in towns but all for keeping the limit at 80 on all national roads.

  9. Honestly, yeah, towns should be 30. It’s madness that people drive 50 through them, especially with the amount of parked cars and pedestrians.

And yeah, 60 on most of our rural roads is the better limit considering braking distances and what you can see around bends. It’s just a shame that we need to be told because we obviously can’t be trusted to keep the rules of the road.

  10. The classic Clones (or other exo-commuter belt town) to Dublin commute is about to get even more fun

  11. Is this required? While we’ve jumped a small bit this year. Road deaths toll has been consistently under 160 vs the peaks of 400 and 300 through the 90s and 2000s.

  12. Not saying the recent deaths aren’t tragic, but we shouldn’t be making major changes to speed limits nationally because of two crashes. We need properly thought out and executed road safety policies, not a knee jerk reaction that stinks if being seen to be doing something.
