  1. Therefore he was told, no matter what alliance has to be made after the next election, it’s gotta be made so that the Israelis don’t have to deal with them.

Mr Martin said he is “acutely aware” of the sense of threat felt in Ireland due to Iran’s nuclear weapons programme and the country’s “consistently destabilising behaviour” in the Middle East and beyond.
No word on how we feel about the Israeli Nukes then..

  2. “Mr Martin said Irish people have strong views on the Israel and Palestine conflict because we are a small and militarily neutral country that relies on all nations complying with international law and rules-based order.”

You sure about that Mícheál? Are you sure it’s not because we can empathise with a people having their land stolen by an aggressive military superpower next door?

  3. >Sinn Féin are ‘most anti-Israeli party in Western Europe

What a load of shite and a pointless talking point. Some Israeli officials really do seem to go out of their way to search for a way to be a victim and not “the bad guys”. It’s paper thin and tiresome.

I’m not exactly his biggest fan, but in fairness to Micheal, he handled it well enough.

    >He said he was aware that Ireland’s “longstanding principled position” on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can be an “ongoing source of friction” in the political relationship between the two countries.

    >“I do, though, want to emphasise at the outset that the assumption that is sometimes made in the Israeli media and public discourse that our position on the conflict is evidence of hostility on the part of Ireland, or the Irish people, towards Israel is simply incorrect,” he said.

  4. When did the Independent suddenly flip to being pro-SF?

  5. Not sure anyone in SF would say they are against Israel itself in theory or the people, they are against the treatment of Palestinians and the parallels with Ireland and our relationship with the UK. The differentiation is important. Like SF haven’t really said anything positive or negative even about other oppressive regimes often but they are definitely pro-Palestine and not anti-Israel but that swings back to if you ever mention anything negative about Israel even with that context you will get the “you are just an antisemite”. I believe gov should be secular but I also understand world politics is complex because people have other beliefs personally too. The world is hard opinions vary. I do think SF should be really clear and should maybe do a bit of a mending tour about this not even in a “we have to fix it” kind of way but just from a clearing the air side of things.

  6. Fair play to Sinn Féin. Supporting Palestine and their right to sovereignty isn’t being anti Israel.

And in fairness, Martin handled the accusation well. I’m glad to see so much of Irish society is pro Palestine.

  7. I thought they were the most anti-Kosovo independence party in Europe.

  8. Basically the most pro human rights party in Western Europe.

  9. Israel with the guilt trips, and with a straight face, in the middle of Benny working to deport every African in Israel.

  10. You have to laugh at the SF logic on this one:

Palestine has the right to self determination.

    Northern Ireland does not.

    😂

  11. Nothing wrong with being anti Israel …… their countless and ongoing human rights abuses against Palestinians draw deserved hate.

SF on the right side of history on this one.

  12. Wow. That study into every political party in western Europe must have taken them forever. Fair dues to them for taking the time to back up this claim and not engage in baseless nonsense.
