  1. I think it’s a great opportunity to completely rethink public broadcasting.

I think we do need some form of public broadcaster to avoid going down the route the US has where the national news agenda is largely dictated by biased billionaires.

    What we need:

    • Independent well funded news and investigative service

    • Some limited funding of arts and media that have a public benefit but may not otherwise be finically feasible

    What we don’t need

    • National broadcaster broadcasting outside foreign media- this can be done by private broadcasters and is largely accessible on streaming services anyway

RTE could be largely stripped back while still providing the critical services it was set up to provide. A subsided broadcaster like RTE should not be providing services that are available privately or by streaming services.

  2. It should be absolutely stripped to the bone into a purely public broadcasting service, if we are to keep it.

  3. Good time to raze it and start over.
We need a public broadcaster that’s independent of government. Doesn’t waste it’s money on foreign shows. And without all the nepo-babies on high salaries.

  4. They are probably still up though as they dont have to pay Tubs anymore.

  5. > Asked by reporters on any conditions being attached to funding RTÉ, Ms Martin replied: “Obviously we have to see robust reform and the trust being restored.

This shows how out of touch they really are, trust didn’t exist before the secret payments were exposed, everyone knew you got a job in RTE based on who you know or who your daddy did a few lines with. Trust will never be restored.
