*From Bloomberg reporters Kitty Donaldson, Alberto Nardelli, and Ellen Milligan:*
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has given the go-ahead for officials to finalize a deal to allow the UK to re-join the European Union’s €95.5 billion Horizon science program, according to people familiar with the matter.
The UK is expected to announce the agreement as soon as this week, with only minor details yet to be ironed out, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
A deal will allow close ties between Europe’s top research hubs to resume, after the UK was frozen out of the fund while tensions flared after Brexit.
Evade the responsibilities, harvest the benefits. I love when governments act like corporations.
Great. Rejoin Erasmus next please.
Damn you got there before me!
This is very good news! Happy it’s finally finished
Good news.
I wonder what concessions we’ve made to get the EU to change their minds.
I apologize if this is answered to in the article but… I understand that the UK can become a social member of Euratom, like Switzerland, but the EU was demanding that the UK would pay to join.
The UK would have to pay the amount that it would have had to pay, had it not left the EU. Which essentially made negotiations break down.
Is the EU making similar demands regarding Horizon and has the UK abided by them?
The long slow march back towards a soft brexit of sort…
