Because the system works for them, it is a self-perpetuating cycle. More investment draws in more people, which then requires more investment.
City leaders just cream off the results of the continued investment.
London is also a major reason most of the UK isn’t pig shit swamp land.
A lot of the regeneration people in my city are absolutely obsessed with London and every penny it gets, to the point where they’re completely ignoring all the seeds of gentrification that are already sprouting all over the place.
If we took all of Londons money and dumped it on a terminally uncool city, that city would still flop because people still wouldn’t want to live there, because it would skip the decades of grass roots community building that always need to come before investment happens.
While I would absolutely love for the nation to become more independent, it’s not going to happen anytime soon. We need London, but we should also start looking at things like more localised food production, energy production, etc.
Sure, it may mean we won’t be able to get certain fruits/vegetables anymore, but we can healthily live off what we can viably grow here.
Things are going to get tougher as the years go on, and we need to be less globally dependant on some of these vital resources.
The country willingly voted for Boris Johnson to be PM, after voting to leave the EU. We have bigger problems than London being a successful financial centre.
The people who work on this city stuff pay tax on earnings etc. What was it they didn’t talk about ? Ceasing activity and sharing out money under communism?
I’m always going to be somewhat sceptical about a writer who cites themselves so comprehensively when constructing an argument (and simultaneously shilling for their own book). Therefore bonus Alanis points awarded for accusing City bosses of operating within an echo chamber.
