Elon Musk secretly ordered his engineers to turn off his company’s Starlink satellite communications network near the Crimean coast last year to disrupt a Ukrainian sneak attack on the Russian naval fleet

  1. Surprising absolutely no-one. Where the hell are the intelligence forces and leadership of the US and EU?

  2. What an asshole!

I though that nobody can be worse than Bill Gates, but it seems that this guy really tries to wind this despicable competition.

  3. I don’t like Musk either but the source here is some guy trying to sell his book

  4. Didn’t he like give Ukraine Starlink so they could HAVE internet at the start of the war?

    This makes no sense :/

  5. I don’t know if the biography touches on this, but I would guess Musk didn’t want Starlink to get anywhere near the U.S.’s laws on exporting arms, like ITAR. Those are extremely serious laws where the consequences are people in prison cells, not a company merely paying a fine.

  6. He probably wants to secure supply of resources and materials… so he plays on two fronts. Disgusting.

  7. Starlink told ukraine to not use its products for war. Musk as ceo of starlink made a decision he saw most benefitted the company within the boundaries of law. It is up to the shareholders to challenge this not any outsider.

As for ukraine they are free to not buy products from starlink if they don’t like the restrictions set up by the corporation.

  8. What a dystopian world we live in where a single asshole with money has such power. If this is real I hope he faces the consequences, though let’s be real, he won’t.

  9. in other interview he said he wasn’t getting paid right so I’m more inclined to believe it’s still monetary issue for him

  10. Musk’s justification makes sense, like he wanted it to be used peacefully, to help the refugees, etc. – not to end up directly assisting attacks in Russian territory.

At the end of the day it’s his service, his rules. If he doesn’t want it to have a military role, then that’s up to him. The US could provide their military satellites if they cared that much.

  11. Yeah, well I can see why he is conflicted with how his technology is being used. It both has a good purpose and a negative purpose in the context of Ukraine. It helps Ukraine and at the same time it is responsible for much death and destruction.

I think it does more good then bad though

  12. The article, which nobody has read apparently, says that Musk was worried about a nuclear retaliation if the Ukrainians struck, based on what Russian military sources told him at the time. That might have been sabbre rattling by the Russians, probably was, but he decided it wasn’t a risk worth taking.
