One of Hellenism’s most hauntingly epic pieces by Theodorakis and Kambanellis you may know about but did you also know it is based on a true story? Check comments for the story

  1. Antonis, the protagonist of the song, was a young Greek prisoner on the Mauthausen concentration camp. A Jewish friend of his collapses carrying one of the heavy rocks prisoners were forced to carry to the top of the “death staircase” as a forced labor leading to death. Antonis rushes to help him but this help is considered an insult and forbidden and the Nazi guard present punishes Antonis by making him carry a rock double as heavy as the previous one. Antonis then proceeds to choose an even heavier rock, triple as heavy – and carries it to the top. There Antonis states his name: “My name is Antonis, and if you are a man come here on the marble threshing floor” challenging the guard. An undying example of bravery and defiance that should be preserved for the ages and remembered. Antonis reportedly survived the war.

I recommend everyone to check this whole epic album called Mauthausen by Theodorakis and vocals by Farantouri containing more masterpieces like this.
