  1. Doesn’t seem very fair on the people that do pay.

If half the country aren’t paying then more and more are going to say why the hell am I.

  2. It will clog up the courts, so at some stage something will have to change.

There was a time when tv dominated how we accessed the world, it was essential, but the license now seems mostly to prop up a self serving celebrity culture.

  3. The state does not have to provide entertainment in my opinion. News coverage should be provided (in parallel with private sources) to make it easily accessible but I really do not want to fund the late late show or most of the programs to be honest. I am happy that they get made and people enjoy them but I do not enjoy them at all. I don’t even own a TV. I would happily pay a small contribute that covers essential programming but if you come to me and tell me that I have to fund First Dates then I just cannot agree with that and that’s what is in place at the moment.

If we have a sizeable percentage of the population that does not want to pay we should take a look at what we are paying for and what we WANT or NEED to pay for and change rules accordingly if it is needed.

  4. The TV Licence has no future, as more and more of the population are comprised of individuals who do not watch live broadcasts (and increasingly individuals who never watch live television growing up and probably see it as archaic). Why would you pay a licence for something you have no interest in watching?

If they want to preserve RTE, it will have to become a tax. But by that stage, the conversation around actual viewership starts to come up.

I’m of the opinion that RTE should just be news/journalism, and cultural programming/documentaries. The celebrity culture also needs gutted. Talentless hacks drawing huge salaries for hosting absolute tripe.

They don’t need to import any programmes – because if I really want to watch something like that, I have likely have better avenues like Netflix or Amazon Prime where I can watch it on demand.

  5. “It has also emerged that RTÉ did not tell the Government that its board had agreed to a 10pc pay rise for senior executives at the station last September, including former director general Dee Forbes.”

And they are looking for funding? That right there should be enough to completely dismantle RTE, or if they want to keep going, make their own revenue without public funding…

  6. You keep using that word… I do not think it means what you think it means
