Defend is a stretch, he’s explaining what they considered a reason, however silly it was. If he gave them a raise again this year, he’d be thicker than I thought.
The only thing this guy needed to say was that it was an inexcusable mistake and it won’t happen again. But his ego/RTE based sense of entitlement wouldn’t even let him do that.
Get him out. Someone unaffiliated or from abroad needs to be brought in and the whole management cadre cleared out to make way for fresh people, fresh ideas and hopefully some aptitude.

If it was the restoration of a 2019 pay cut, did the utterly useless CFO Richard Collins who joined in Jan 2020 receive a 10% increase as well ?
