Any change in the rules of the road should require anyone with a license to be informed. It should not be up to us as that’s a recipe for disaster.

  1. >If taking any exit from 6 o’clock to 12 o’clock…..

    That AM or PM?

  2. People would swear up and down that the red line for the car in going straight from the right hand lane should merge into the left hand lane at the exit.

  3. Honestly, why do roundabouts with traffic lights exist? That literally defeats the purpose of the roundabout to allow traffic to continuously pass through…

On another note they get absolutely bottlenecked during school hours.

  4. Recently discovered a 3 lane roundabout exists in Ireland. Used it for the first time and probably almost caused an accident

  5. Hi OP, serious question, is this a change ? Or just a reminder. The 12:00 rule has been in place since at least 2014 . . . Or maybe I’m picking up on the wrong thing.

  6. What about the indicate right until you are about to exit? Is that gone? I see many use it and others only indicate when they exit

  7. I’m driving 20 years and this was always the advice

  8. I always thought that if you need to put traffic lights on a roundabout then the traffic flow is too complicated and it’s not fit for purpose.

  9. I have book from 2011, same rule, I’m glad I did not get this question on my exam

  10. What am I missing here? That’s always been how you should use roundabouts..right?

  11. Nothing has changed here since I did my test in 1989.

  12. “Any changes in the rules should be shared with licensed drivers”

Good thing this rule has not changed ever then

  13. I wish they covered turn signals more clearly, it’s just mentioned in the pictures now. This is the thing most people ignore.

  14. There’s a roundabout near me that has only 2 exits: left (9 o clock) and straight on (12 o clock). There are 2 lanes leading into and going around this roundabout. Nobody ever seems to use the right lane regardless of what exit they are taking and I get beeped at when I use it for going straight on (12 o clock). Am I in the wrong? If I am, what is the point of having the right lane?

  15. I was in the car with my da recently (learner) and his directions for roundabout exits were “that one” *gestures at windscreen* so thanks for the clarification

  16. Not sure where you learnt to drive but that’s been the rule my entire life like

  17. My favourite are the roundabouts that do have road markings that tell you to use the right hand lane when going straight ahead, but the arrows are only painted on the road like twenty metres from the roundabout.

So if there’s traffic you can’t see the markings and if there’s no traffic you only see them when it’s too late. Also they’re faded because they were painted fifteen years ago and what is maintenance?

  18. I gotta say, that’s really poorly written.

The order of information is all wrong and many of the sentences are way too long.

E.g. follow what signposts or road makings tell you to do supercedes the “golden” rule. For clarity make that the first bullet point since it’s step 1 in deciding what lane to use.

  19. What the Rules of the Road say are not actually the rules of the road. Somewhere in the small print it says that it should not be taken as an interpretation of the actual laws and regulations.

The only real roundabout rule is this impossibly brief one in regulation 15 of the [Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) Regulations, 1997 (S.I. 182 of 1997](https://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1997/si/182/made/en/print#article15):

    >15. When entering a roundabout, a driver shall turn to the left.

All else is “good practice”, which is why the text in the current RotR book is so damn vague and wishy-washy. “Take extra care at all exits” – thanks, book, that changes my plans for sure.

  20. I can’t edit the post for some reason but here is what a 2008 1st edition had. I’ll hopefully be able to add the other 4 pages in replies. I can’t add them together. Smarter people than me would handle this a lot better! 😆

No mention of clocks. It makes a difference depending on the layout of the roundabout. This is why all licence holders should be informed of every update. We are all driving around with different sets of rules. Well, the people that try to obey them are. The other 75% just do what they like.

  21. In the 80’s there used to be ads on rte explaining how to use them.

When the first one was built in Carrick-on-Suir you’d swear people had just stepped into the tardis.

  22. Bit confused so I’ll just pick whichever lane I fancy and won’t bother with the indicator
