When it’s hot and humid out, like today, ticks will go out in search of a host. It’s called “questing”.

While questing, ticks hold onto leaves and grass by their third and fourth pair of legs. They hold the first pair of legs outstretched, waiting to climb on to the host.

Tick Talk has a great rundown of how to prevent bites and remove ticks.

  1. Doesn’t seem like anything to worry about? Unless you’re rolling around in the grass in the nip 24/7 I don’t think its anything to be concerned about. Something like 5% of ticks carry lyme disease, and most cases of lyme disease are relatively harmless.

I think the danger of twisting your ankle walking around in tall grass is far more concerning.

  2. A large part of the rise of ticks is our destruction of their predators, such as frogs, rodents and bats. Bats will grab them right off of a long blade of grass. We reap what we sow.
