  1. Nice drawings. Father Mathew (one t) wasn’t that down on beer; it was spirits he hated.

    In the early 20th century, most casual workers got their daily work, if any, in the pub, and were paid in the pub, having to buy a few drinks for the boss to keep on his sweet side. It led a lot of men to become alcoholics, and starved many families. Larkin, a teetotaller and non-smoker, worked adamantly against this system.
