EU has no immediate plans to ban Russian LNG

  1. Indeed. Through really bad policy making, Europe does not control its own energy and as a consequence leaves itself vulnerable.

  2. It a masterful statesmanship: ban yourself from cheap Russian pipe gas so that you can then buy more expensive Russian liquefied gas.

  3. What I read: “EU has no immediate plans to stop the war in Ukraine.”

  4. There’s the arms lobby that makes sure good money is made from this war.

There’s the oil/gas lobby that makes sure oil/gas trade with Russia just continues as normal.

Then there’s the loudly announced token measures like “Russians are no longer allow to enter the EU by car carrying cell phones” to placate the ordinary citizen and make them believe that the EU is driven by some kind of moral agenda. But in the end, money talks.

  5. Europe’s imports of Russian LNG between January and July are up 40% compared with the same period in 2021 and before the war in Ukraine.

  6. It makes no sense to ban LNG, it’s transported by tanker and much like Russian oil will find a buyer. The things that hurts Russia is to restrict prices by which EU countries buy Russian stuff (“price cap”) and not to import pipeline gas which provides Russia with much better margins.

  7. A lot of “alternative opinions” in the comments lately.

  8. Well, Europe needs energy, we have to buy resources. Unless there are no other alternatives we have to stick with resources from Russia. The same applies for Russian uranium bought by France.

Germany is already facing a recession, do we need to further hurt ourselves?

  9. Now I feel like supporting USA in US-EU trade wars. Because USA is one of the few countries that doesn’t seem to betray Ukraine.
