Hello everyone,
Im newly arrived here so am unfamiliar with the utility bills. My landlady is quite shady so I tend not to trust her word. Today she sent the utility bill (that was received 3 weeks ago lol) asking to pay it. But I live here only from the start of August. I dont know who was here during June/July and of course I refuse to pay for those months. What would be the best course of action for me? Is it possible to contact the electricity supplier to request kWh only for August? I lived here alone and although occasionally would use the AC, 180eu bill for less than a month seems mind blowing
Thank for reading my ranty question 😅

The bill is for 19/6-21/08 period. Did you take a meter reading when you moved in? If you did, it is quite easy to see the difference between the figures and calculate how much of that is yours.
Very shady indeed . The landlord should have gone with you to AHK and change the name of the one responsible to pay . With my landlord we went to AHK and we also declared the number showed on the electricity counter just before I moved in so he would be charged for consumption before the lease went into effect and I after that
She should track down the previous tenant to pay their share of the bill or she takes responsibility and pays for it. Both options seem unlikely by the looks of it. If she doesn’t cooperate, pay the bill and deduct the 2/3 from the next rent payment. Either way you’re screwed here tbh. So conclusion is : ✨welcome to cyprus lmao✨
Do you have a contract for the rent?
EAC **cannot** know what is your share. They send someone to read the meter once every 2 months. They’ll tell you it’s between you and the owner.
Legally, when you move into the house you take your contract to EAC and they turn the account to your name. EAC will send someone on the day of your move to take measurement and will charge accordingly. Clean and nice.
If you didn’t do that, then you should have taken note of the consumption of electricity and water the day you moved in. Thus, you would know your share bill*your_kWh/total_kWh.
If you didn’t do that as well, then the only thing you can do is share according to the number of days. But this can be shaky. For instance, the owner can say the place was empty before and there was no consumption.
Bottom line, the bill is not in your name. If you don’t pay, the owner cannot do something except kick you out. If he wants to go to court (he wouldn’t for that amount of money), he would need to prove what share of the bill is yours — which is impossible.
Well, you should have transfered electricity in your name. In this case you would pay only starting that date. You’ll also get an utility bill which often required by banks and migration office (… they also want a rental contract).
The simplest solution is to pay the bill, but do not pay the ‘leftover’ when rent contract expires. If it happens at the end of rental period (year, two, three, etc), you will be in exact same position on ‘3-months consumption’ at that moment.
There is no way to see what is your part of consumption, because metering is been taken every 2 (3?) months.
So i would called her and mentioned that the duration of the bill is before moving in. I would offered to pay half of it but if she declined leave it unpaid and bolt. It’s not in your name.
let me guess, limassol💀
