The Swedish government will shortly commission the Swedish Armed Forces to investigate the conditions for sending JAS-39 Gripen to Ukraine. The government wants information on how a handover affects Sweden’s defense capabilities and how they are replaced.

Fingers crossed
They wouldn’t leak it to the press if they weren’t reasonably sure they would be able to go through with it. This has likely been in the works for some time. But Swedish politics acts on rules and procedure, and the first “official” step is always something like this.
Also, in completely unrelated news: [Saab has received an order about finding ways of strengthening the Swedish Air force using the existing fleet.](https://www.saab.com/newsroom/press-releases/2023/saab-receives-order-for-additional-functionality-for-gripen-e) As I said, completely unrelated, pure coincidence that it happens on the same day.
For every non swede.
1. “Ekot” is one of the most reputable sources of news in sweden. So that they go out with it means it probably is true that we are going to look into it.
2. One important clausul is in the end – “En politisk förutsättning innan något beslut kan fattas är att Turkiet släppt in Sverige i Nato.” Or in short and english “we need to be part of Nato before we can send planes”
Gripen are able to lauch Taurus, JDAMs and most other modern missiles, including Iris-T, AMRAAM, etc.
So they’re a cheap and effective way of getting a lot of ordnance into the sky and fully integrated with targetting and datalinks, unlike the current temporary solutions in place with Ukraine’s jets.
How many Gripens does Sweden have in an operational state?
This sounds promising!
Yes please, we very need it 👍
