“We have to put a winter protection umbrella over Ukraine”
Federal Foreign Minister Baerbock has specified her demand to better protect Ukraine’s critical infrastructure in the coming winter. In an interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, Baerbock said that **she wanted to encourage her partners to temporarily give up available air defense systems**, for example to protect electricity, water and heat supplies in Ukraine.
Baerbock also sees opportunities in the provision of additional German-made air defense systems. She literally said: We want to add more to it in the coming months . According to the manufacturer, Iris-T protects against attacks from aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and short-range ballistic missiles. The system can fire at targets up to 20 kilometers altitude and 40 kilometers range. Baerbock emphasized that the Gepard ammunition from German production is also “now really getting started”.
When asked about Germany’s NATO commitments and the goal of spending two percent of gross domestic product on defense, the minister said that instead of inefficiently dividing things up in order to always get to two percent, a multi-year average would be much more efficient.
At the same time, Baerbock explained that sharing the burden in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine also meant that millions of people in Europe found protection, a million of them in Germany. Baerbock wants to address the burden of caring for and accommodating Ukrainian refugees on her trip to the USA. Germany and Europe did not need to hide, emphasized Baerbock.
